I just got finished with a French travelogue on late 1800's England, and the poverty stricken were pretty horrific. Though the French writer was very impressed with the workhouses, and thought they were very clean. Not at all like the rumors in UK folklore. He also said, though, that they were a bit like prisons, and the English thought getting your life controlled was a fair exchange for getting food and a bed. But it was that same lack of freedom that the British poor feared so much that they'd rather starve..
Ahahaha yep it always. freaks me out a little bit to write Ivan, no lie. It is fascinating but at the same time I just. claw at my face and go nonono very quietly xD
And yeah, that was basically what they were. TThey were prisons where you traded your freedom for food and a place to sleep, more or less. IT'S ALL VERY GRIM but hey, what did I even start writing this fic for in the first place? xD
