(So. Freaking. Sorry for the lack of updates! T_T)
Natalia ran her fingers along the front of her dress, just below the neckline. She could feel the pendant resting there. "Did this person say why they had the necklace for sale? Was it an heirloom, by any chance? Something of their own design?"
The merchant smiled apologetically. "I regret to say I have told you all I know. I make a point to not ask any of my customers awkward questions."
"Did you tell anyone else what you learned about Natalia? asked Toris.
“Only the daughter of the head of this village. The poor girl seemed so troubled by something, I could not help but give her that advice.”
"How very kind of you!"
"Where did you meet the stranger and buy the pendant?" asked Natalia, ignoring Toris's comment.
"In the very same woods in which I had my dream. I am afraid the exact location escapes me, however I passed a small cottage, not long after. Perhaps the person you seek lives there?"
---
Natalia set out immediately for the forest, with Toris trailing after.
"Do you not want to stay for the wedding?" he asked. "Or at the very least, to congratulate Lien?"
"Why?" asked Natalia. "It is clear that Lien has found good fortune. She no longer needs my help, and I doubt she wants my congratulations. Not when she is being given so many already."
"Still..." said Toris.
Natalia pulled the sunflower pendant from underneath her collar. For a moment, it looked as if she were ignoring Toris yet again. A moment later though, she motioned for him to come closer and look into it. He obeyed, and saw Lien being embraced by her father.
Toris smiled. "They look so happy!"
"I...am glad," said Natalia, returning the pendant to its former hiding place. "One who fights as hard as she deserves to live."
"I agree," said Toris.
"And as for him, he is where he belongs. It clearly does him good to have another to care for."
"Who?" Toris asked. "Do you mean Francis? What do you mean by that? Natalia? Natalia, come back!"
His last words were directed to the fortune teller, who had continued on her way into the woods.
"What do you want now?" she called over her shoulder. "I've shown you my talent. Go away."
"No!" he cried, running to catch up. He caught her by the arm and spun her to face him. "I... Natalia, let me come with you!"
She was so shocked by this, that she could only stare. Finally... "Excuse me?" she coolly asked.
"I am on a quest, the same as you! I do not know where to look, anymore than you do!"
"I know where to look!" she snapped. "I will follow the advice of that merchant, and look in these woods."
"Then you have more of a lead than I, for I have no idea where to begin my search. Please, let me accompany you!" He let go of her arm, seeming to notice for the first time that he still held it, and blushed heavily. "I - I believe that in these types of adventures, the fates of two strangers may be more entwined than one would suspect. Perhaps that is the case here. Perhaps, if we search together, we could both find what we seek. Perhaps -"
"Oh, hush!" said Natalia. She drew back in what seemed to be disgust, but kept her head bowed so that her eyes were on the ground and her hair hid her face. "If it truly means that much to you, then you may join me. Do not get any ideas, though! If you get into trouble, I won't go back to save you! You must take care of yourself."
Toris took in her words and her voice, sharp like a knife. He smiled. "I think I can handle that."
"Then keep up!" she said.
And off they went - fair fortune teller and quiet man - to dark woods and darker fate.
