Contrary to popular belief, the King of Spades was actually about the same height as his betrothed. When the two stood side by side draped in measuring tapes and plainclothes, it was blatantly obvious there was no drastic height difference.
The maids revolved around their Majesty, and soon to be queen jotting down numbers. The castle would never admit it, but the entire castle was running awfully behind in the wedding plans.
For Spadian monarchy, it was important for the couple to wed to the nearest Spades Hour- when the sun was at its highest point (to signify how strong the Spade was in a Hand) at a precise date, dictated by the Tower of Spades, naturally. As soon as Alfred had gotten consent from his parents, the entire kingdom stopped moving to watch the tower’s hands spin and move to find the next day of Spade fortune.
That day just happened to be in two weeks.
The king didn’t seem to mind that their wedding would be held so close to their finalized engagement-almost supported it. His advisors- and even the future Queen himself, assumed it was because Arthur was tired of courting, tired of waiting. He just wanted to be wed and be with Alfred.
Secretly, that idea made Alfred squeal and jump when he was alone.
The future Queen’s eyes darted as far as they could to catch a glimpse of her future husband. More dressmakers were busy with fitting Arthur’s old Naval coat to get a good measurement for his wedding suit. Of course, the two were not supposed to see what each wore until the Day, but time had been on crunch, so the two were being measured together. King Arthur of Spades looked un-amused, picking at his nails aimlessly as women busied themselves with carefully pinning cuffs etc. Alfred smiled to himself.
He hadn’t realized that instead, he’d let out a very masculine giggle. Arthur’s eyes darted up and turned to Alfred. The king smirked.
“See something you like?”
Alfred was about to retort back with a smart-aleck comment, when the maid beside him grabbed his head and muttered. “NO MOVING.” With her strong fingers holding Alfred’s jaw in place, all he could muster up was “You suck.”
Arthur’s lips were still morphed into a cocky grin, but he redirected his attention back to whatever.
“You’re good, your Majesty.” The king looked down at the dressmaker who was offering back his velvety ‘King’ clothes. Arthur nodded curtly and began dressing. Alfred’s shoulders slumped when he realized Arthur wasn’t going to wait for him.
“Am I almost done?” Alfred whispered. “I’m kinda hungry...” he lied.
His dressmaker shrugged. Alfred’s eyes watched as Arthur buttoned up his shirt and grabbed his coat. He didn’t even bother with a salute, or goodbye.
“Wait! Arthur-“
Alfred honestly hadn’t meant for his words to sound so shocked, so upset, so desperate.
Arthur turned his head around. “Yes?”
“I-uh-you’re done, huh?” Alfred chuckled nervously. Arthur’s former playful demeanor seemed to have deflated quite a while ago.
“Yes, git, I’m done. It’s not very hard to tell,” Arthur said blankly.
Alfred had known Arthur long enough to know that he wasn’t always the light-hearted person. He was a king, for crying out loud. Of course he had a lot of stress and stuff on his shoulders, right?
But he meant well, Alfred knew.
Alfred mustered up a cheeky smile and waved lightly. Arthur blinked and left with a monotonous ‘Cheers’.
As the dressmaker started to finish off, Alfred turned to the other ladies in the room. “The king gets PMS, right?”
Whaaaa? I hope francis does appear! I lOVE THIS! Poor alfred he arleady got a little preview about arthur, i really, really, really, love it. cant wait to read more
Of course France has to appear xD // patient, young grasshoppers
The rubbery ball ricocheted off the rocky ground, Alfred’s perfect hand-eye coordination helping him to scoop it back up. For a good 30 minutes, the child’s toy had kept him preoccupied as he walked through town to reach his parents’ home. He had declined Arthur’s courteous offer to take the Spades carriage because he’d always felt a bit awkward in the fancy ride alone. Arthur had never offered to accompany him, and so Alfred felt he was better off just walking the distance.
It was near twilight when his parents’ large mansion came into view amidst the modest townhouses. Alfred picked up his ball and bolted to the front door.
Naturally, the future monarch was granted access from the Jack of Spades to reside on the estate, but Alfred had promised he’d stay with his brother until he was permanently residing at the castle. There were a few times when Alfred had accidentally falling asleep during his Royal lessons or had a glass too much of wine and ended up crashing at the castle, but when given the choice, he would choose to spend the night at his home.
Alfred’s parents were two important figures of keeping Spade-Heart diplomacy. Even before them, the Oxenstierna family line was key to strategic alliances of the two kingdoms in times of war, economic downturns and more. Of course, Lord Berwald and Tino were rarely on their land. They lived closer up north in times of Spade-Heart peace in their cottage in North Spades. Matthew, Alfred’s brother was the only full-time resident of the estate. When Alfred became the official Queen of Spades, Matthew could choose to find a partner (he was also a capable Bearer), or stay on the Oxenstierna land. He had already been penned its 1st heir after Alfred had accepted Arthur’s proposal.
The rambunctious teen knocked three times hard on the front door (he forgot his keys again), humming to himself.
Matthew unlocked the door and sighed, rubbing his eyes. He looked a bit fatigued, as if there had been something (or someone!) bothering him for a while.
“Mattie~!” Alfred greeted, wrapping his long arms around his twin. “Gawd, I for one went through a lot of BS today-“ Before he said anymore, another figure came into view behind his brother. Alfred gulped, recognizing the familiar orange and gold coat.
yes, by default, America & Canada are the children of Sweden and Finland X) (don't ask)
Arthur nodded, lighting up his cigarette. His teeth held the cigarette in place as he picked up the envelope from one of the Spades servant. The servant bowed and fled the King’s office as he unwound the manila envelope.
His green eyes scanned down the thick cardstock over each name, nodding at pretty much all of them. His parents (who were currently on an indefinite vacation in South Spades) had been underlined in blue (no promises), and his Naval commander brothers had already sent personal letters of ‘No way in hell, HAHA’. Even if Arthur resented being King at times, he knew that his brothers had pushed him the crown because they actually cared for him, and knew he would work as King. Well, anyway, the wedding’s attendance would basically not feature any pure blooded Kirklands aside from Arthur, and if he felt like coercing, maybe his baby brother (who was currently being apprenticed by the Joker).
He had already met the infamous Oxenstierna couple, Alfred’s parents, and he recognized some of the other names, like Matthew.
The Clubs monarchy had accepted, and so had a few once-rivals-turned-diplomatic-friends.
He skipped through a bunch of names until he landed on the most recent RSVPs.
Jack of Diamonds, plus one (Lady Lilli of Diamonds)
King of Diamonds - Red Dot.
The pervert wouldn’t attend.
Arthur chuckled, slamming the paper on the desk. He leaned back on the chair and smiled.
"I guess I've really won, then," he murmured to himself.
