The doctor had appeared, clipboard in hand. Denmark was the first to reach him, as he clinically pronounced the words:
"He's alive, but I'm afraid there was a lot of damage done. You should know that it's not a pretty sight; his face was very badly burned."
The doctor let out a sigh. Norway almost spoke, before the doctor added, looking as though he was quite sorry to have to say this about a teenager, "He's also been blinded. I'm afraid there was nothing we could do to save his eyes."
Denmark cursed, punching the wall. Norway could see Sweden's hands clench, as though he might join Denmark in abusing the wall.
But Norway himself felt a kind of cold chill come over him. His little brother couldn't possibly be blind... he'd only looked into those purple-red eyes that morning, asking if he needed help with his presentation last minute.
Finland was the one to remain rational. "Can we see him?"
"He's heavily sedated; it's likely he won't know you're there." Apparently, that meant yes, because the doctor gestured for them to follow him, slipping through the sliding doors.
Finland held Sweden's hand tightly, as nurses and doctors walked past them in their scrubs. Denmark didn't seem to think of holding Norway's hand, his eyes intently looking ahead.
Norway held his own hand, interlacing the fingers and trying to prepare himself for what he was going to see.
His heart lurched as he entered the room. Iceland was in the bed, and the mop of silver-blond hair clearly marked him, but his whole face was swathed in bandages, his chin jutting out at the bottom, and his lips only narrowly visible. His chest rose and fell, and the heart monitor beeped at regular intervals.
Norway was there first, reaching for Iceland's hand, only to find that this was swathed in bandages as well. He must have hurt his hands clutching his face.
Finland was talking to the doctor, saying quietly, "When can he come home?"
"We should be able to discharge him in a couple days. No sooner than that." The doctor had a sympathetic tinge to his voice.
Finland thanked him, and he disappeared out the door.
Norway could feel his eyes start to burn, but he choked them back. He refused to acknowledge the huge change that had taken place; in a couple of days, Iceland would be back to normal. He would be all right; he may have been a slender teenager, but he could pull through this, couldn't he?
"Hey, Ice. It's going to be okay; you're going to get better, and then you can eat salted fish all you want. Okay?" Denmark was on the other side of the bed, stroking the top of Iceland's head. It was unhurt, soft hair lying in wisps over the bandages.
Norway wanted to say something too, but it was hard to come up with something. He laid his hand on his head, saying quietly, "You'll be okay."
Sweden and Finland were at the foot of the bed, and Finland cleared his throat. His eyes were watery, as he said, "We should plan for when he comes home. Someone will need to take care of him. Sweden and I-"
"I'll take him." Norway interrupted, gaze on Iceland. He was the most suitable choice, wasn't he?
"Whoa, Norway, maybe he should stay at my house. He knows it better than yours," Denmark said, looking across Iceland at him.
"He hasn't been there in decades. And I'm..." Norway swallowed the lump in his throat. "I'm his big brother. I should look out for him." His eyes landed on Finland, who looked ready to protest. "You've got your hands full with Sealand and Ladonia. I have no one else to take care of; I can devote my time to him."
Sweden's hand landed on Finland's shoulder. "Makes sense."
Finland sighed, nodding. "All right. But we'll all pitch in. You shouldn't have to shoulder it all alone."
"Yeah, we're family; I'll stop by every day," Denmark promised, eyes earnest and strangely soft. He'd always had something of a soft spot for Iceland.
Norway nodded, feeling like his voice would crack if he spoke again. He kissed the top of Iceland's head, willing him to get better.
So many feels! This is a lovely fill, so glad I can track this without having to have a paid account like livejournal required. I might've missed this otherwise. Lovely work, will always be looking forward to updates :)
OP again: This is so painful to read, but that's why it's so good. I absolutely am a sucker for heavy emotional angst, along with the physical. Especially the kind between brothers, and while my favorite is the Iceland-Norway brother bond, I also really like the Denmark-Norway-Iceland dynamic and overall all the Nordics and their familial like unit.
Favorite parts: Norway and Denmark wanting to physically comfort their youngest, and both wanting to take Iceland to their places. Denmark teases a lot, but that's just how he shows his affection and I'm glad you included that he had a soft spot for Iceland. And Norway calling himself Iceland's big brother and that it's his duty to be there for him and he won't have it any other way. Even though it's more emotion than we usually see from Norway, I believe you've kept him perfectly in-character.
Again, this is more than I could have ever hoped for from my little prompt, thank you so much for filling it and filling it so wonderfully!!! Have you written other fills? If so which ones so I may look them up if they involve any of the characters I like.
Poor bb Icey is gonna be horrible disfigured along with losing his sight? I'm finding this to be the best fill thus far since the move over to DW. Is this going to effect his Nation at all?
