Gah, that's my fault for being so obscure when I wrote it -the upshot is that Australia would have believed Hutt River, and he would probably have listened to Sealand if Sealand had told him directly, but he actually got it second-hand via someone in Europe telling him that Sealand had been lying. Since Sealand didn't say where it had happened (if he had, he'd have had to say Hutt River was there), Australia assumed that it had happened in someone else's place and been investigated, so he made a couple of disapproving noises and then pretty much forgot the entire incident.
So, yeah, there is an explanation, but I should have gone into more detail over exactly what Hutt River heard, since he simply made the assumption that since very few people in Europe listened, Australia wouldn't either.
