Clutching at the hand in hers, Madison Williams looked up at the man who was supposedly her date for the day, a soft smile gracing her features. Happy, she was, for Alfred F. Jones was the man of her dreams. And said blonde just happened to be the one she was currently holding hands with.
Alfred was currently humming a soft tune to himself, looking around at those who occupied the park, occasionally glancing at Maddie before looking away again. Maddie swore she saw his cheeks pink every time she caught him looking at her, but it could have just been her imagination.
She looked down at their linked hands—covered only by wool gloves to keep them from freezing in the cold of Boston—and managed to keep herself from giggling in the giddy feeling she kept feeling. Ecstatic as she was, she told herself that she wouldn’t freak out and start laughing hysterically over their simple date.
The one to break the silence between the two was Alfred, since Maddie was too busy keeping her emotions in check, and he noted, “It sure is cold outside.”
“Ye…” Maddie squeaked when she realized a giggle had bubbled up from her throat and escaped her mouth, causing her to stumble over her own two feet for a second in surprise. But Alfred helped her back up by looping an arm around her slim waist. This resulted in both Maddie and Alfred blushing, but Maddie continued on with her response to try and rid of the sudden awkward of the situation, as simple as it was. “Yeah…”
“You alright there?” the other asked, squeezing her waist lightly before moving his arm to take her hand again, making eye contact for just a moment for reassurance.
“I’m fine… Thank you.” She smiled up at him, pushing her glasses back up her nose and fixing them from falling off. “So, um…” Shifting, Maddie moved a little closer to Alfred’s side, as if clinging to him. “Where exactly are we going?”
“To eat outside.” Alfred held up a small bag, and Maddie noticed that there were—store-bought—sandwiches packed, along with a couple cans of liquids that she couldn’t quite make out through the fog on her glasses. When Maddie gave him a look, mostly questioning why out in the cold of all places, the American continued, “I thought it would be nice out today, but I forgot how cold it was going to get, but then I remembered you and you’re used to the cold aren’t you? So, I…”
Maddie laughed, even as he rambled on and on, and squeezed his hand, lightly. “It’s alright, Al. I was hoping we could eat out in the cold anyway.”
“…but you know, I wasn’t sure if—“ Alfred stopped himself when his mind registered what she had said, blinking in slight confusion. “Really? You mean it?”
“Of course.”
A bright smile found its way at Alfred’s lips, and Maddie stood on her tiptoes to kiss him on the cheek, causing the both of them to blush—Alfred especially.
