Because let's face it, humans can and will make a religion out of pretty much anything. A portion of citizens of a nation of writer's choice find out about the existence of said nation, only wires ger crossed somewhere and these people think nation A is the god of nation A. What does nation A do when s/he finds out?
Bonus 1: They are the last to find out. Everybody else knows first. Bonus 2: Missionary to nation B; B is less than pleased. A ptotest they can't stop it because of the newly-fanged freedom of religion even though they want to. Bonus 3: It's the "Potato Bastard" and Romano-Who-Has-The-Pope completely flips.
