Wolfsbane 2/5

Neither responded to this. The wolf beside him – Herakles, Francis had called him – seemed nonplussed, while Kiku tried to keep his flustered feelings under wraps. Showing weakness would only make Francis tease him more.

"I'll just let you two lovebirds be – or is that lovebeasts?" he smiled, sardonic, bowed in a mocking way and made his way to leave.

"Au revoir, mon cher, he said as his parting shot. Herakles let out a growl in the back of his throat which made Kiku shudder involuntarily.

The wolf came even closer. "Are you ok?"

Kiku nodded, wondering if he wouldn't have been safer with Francis. Francis was a flirt, a cassanova, but he wasn't a rapist, and he'd never rip Kiku apart. He could not be so sure about this one; with wolves you could never tell. These predators triggered something inside of himself, an intrinsic fear of a natural enemy.

But the wolf looked nonthreatening, and with Francis gone, the anger had dissipated.

"I'll take you home," he said. "Let me take that."

Kiku moved to protest, but the wolf had easily plucked it up. Uneasy as he was, his back welcomed the relief.

Kiku followed, feeling hesitance mix with slight curiosity. The wolf looked to him, his eyes were green, he saw now, and his brown hair fell in soft waves around his head. He was attractive, for a wolf, Kiku supposed. His white shirt, stained with grass and dust from travel clung tightly to his body, and left little to the imagination. Kiku felt a flush under his skin that had nothing to do with fear, and he looked down. He hadn't had a reaction this strong to someone....ever. He couldn't even blame mating season this time, for that was three month's past. Kiku shook his head. These thoughts, ah, he needed to get a mate lest he try and proposition the bus driver yet.

"Are you still afraid? He won't follow, Francis isn't that persistent. Besides, I could take him if he ever did."

"No," Kiku said in all honesty. Francis wasn't what had frightened him.

They were silent a moment, until Kiku cleared his throat. "I should be going, wolf-san. I have things to attend to. I thank you for your concern, but I cannot impose on your hospitality any longer."

"Herakles," he corrected gently. "And I want to help. I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if someone hurt you..."

"Ah..." Kiku said. He paused and shifted uncomfortably. Herakles' voice was tender, his gaze even more so. He'd never been looked at that way before.

"Well, I suppose, if it would please you...."

"Yes, it would," Herakles said. He burst into a bright smile. He was certainly strange for a wolf.
They walked together, Kiku only a few paces behind Herakles. Certainly they would've made an odd pair to anyone watching. A wolf and a sheep, types which usually didn't cross paths.

"Do you like your job?" Herakles asked conversationally. "I see you there all the time..."

Kiku blinked. He couldn't recall seeing Herakles before, which gave him the unpleasant feeling that he had been watched, let alone by a wolf.

"It meets my needs," Kiku said carefully.

"I work right across from you," Herakles said. "Same place as Francis. He's a bit higher up though...I just work in the mail room."

"Mail room...." Kiku said thoughtfully. His mind brought forth an image: a beret pulled low, brown coat, tall boots and rolled up jeans.

A very sleepy employee bringing in packages to be delivered, one who he'd once found on the ground below the package and breathing so shallowly that he'd been halfway through CPR when he'd woken up and been sleepy and surprised, leaving Kiku quite mortified and muttering explanations.

He remembered seeing an employee he had seen in other places, sleeping and surrounded by cats, but never paid attention to beyond the first smile at the cats, and the secondary reaction of pulling back from his wolf scent. The vision in his mind meshed with the wolf he saw now.

"I believe I remember you," Kiku said. "You fell asleep then, I thought you were dead and..." He looked down, blushing. Herakles had thought he'd been kissed, even used some tongue. It was sadly, the highlight of Kiku's love life in these past years.

"Yes, then," Herakles said, pleased now, and his bushy tail began to wag. "I see you often when I go to eat, or deliver things, but you're always busy, so I've never said hello before."

"Then....forgive me for being forward, but why now?" Kiku asked.

"You seemed uneasy out here. I just finished delivering a package and I thought I'd keep you company so you wouldn't be looking over your shoulder all the time," Herakles said. "You shouldn't walk alone so much...it's dangerous."

"Thank you.....I must admit you're different than the other wolves I've met before," Kiku said.

"Herakles tilted his head, his silky ears twitching. "Wolf? I'm of the dog tribe," he said.

"Forgive the assumption, you smelled and looked like a wolf to me," Kiku said apologetically.

"I have wolf in my lines from my father's side. My mother is from the dog tribe. But I've never really considered myself a wolf," Herakles said. "Pack order has no interest in me...everyone who knows me says I act like a cat in a dog's body. "

"I see," Kiku said. His ears flicked. Wolves could lie, though foxes were more known for cunning and lying. He didn't smell the acrid stench of lies, though. Some were known to hide it so well that it couldn't even be scented, but those were mostly very talented foxes. Besides, a part of him – perhaps the humanesque part – didn't believe Herakles was lying.

Herakles titled his head again. "It was me you were afraid of, not Francis....? Why...?"

"Francis is no threat. He only is interested in as he puts it 'l'amour'. You...I assumed you were a wolf," Kiku said.

Herakles looked sad. "And that was all you needed to know about me?"

"Wolves are...they're predators," Kiku said. "I am of the sheep tribe, and deep inside, whenever I am near a predator, my instincts tell me to be wary."

Herakles touched him lightly on the arm, and Kiku flinched. "Listen to me," he said in a low, intense voice. "I would never hurt you, no matter what my blood is."

"I...." Kiku said.

"I'm sorry if I've ever startled you," Herakles said, drawing back now. He looked grim, and Kiku missed the smile which had lit up his features.

"These things are hard to fight....prejudice is one thing, but this is instinct. Everything within me tells me to run. Isn't it the same for you?"

"No," Herakles said. He turned away. "Everything within me tells me to protect you."

He wondered if he should ask the pressing question of why? Why take the trouble? Why have a desire to protect? Perhaps his mother's side had been a sheepdog. Was that it?

The trees thinned as they walked in silence. It wasn't comfortable, and Herakles seemed lost in his own thoughts.

"I wish it wasn't like this," Herakles said, looking out at the cloudless sky. "Everyone assumes that because I have a wolf for a father, I'm bloodthirsty. "

"It's an unpleasant matter," Kiku said carefully. "But it's in our blood. What can we do?"

Herakles let out a sigh. The trees were thinning ahead as the noise of the city preceded the widening of streets, the many loud noises and smells that made Kiku's inner instincts want to panic at any given moment. They were of course, illogical most of the time, but living as their tribes made them illogical by nature.

Soon enough, they were at the door of their respective buildings. Funny how long they had crossed each other's paths and how he'd never noticed him as anything but a threat at the edge to be avoided.

Kiku took the package again once he was at the glass door of his company. He murmured a thank you as he took it; his back however, ached in protest.

He wondered again, why the trouble? Why would his protection mean anything? He turned back to Herakles and saw a gaze so fond, and caught the scent he hadn't before. It was a sweet, heady one. Yao had said it was much like opium.

Love. It was the same look Herakles had given him when he had woken from the first nap, from the misguided attempt of CPR on Kiku's part. The same heat under his skin, like a heat season pulled thin over the seasons.

"Will I see you tomorrow?" Herakles asked. He was calm again, no trace of the cynicism or anger that had shown on their trip.

"Maybe," Kiku said. "It would...make me happy to see you again."

"I'll be there," Herakles said. "If you tell me when your things ship, I can help you with them. My father wouldn't mind, he's very lax in things."

Kiku connected the dots together. "Your father is Julius Roma?" Kiku said, a little surprised.

Herakles nodded. "I have a lot of family...my father, it's like he's one of the rabbit tribe," Herakles said, shaking his head.

Even Kiku managed a slight smile, a polite chuckle at this.

Herakles tipped his hat, only to realize he hadn't worn his beret that day. He looked up, sleepy and a little confused at the air he was touching. He was beautiful, and gentle in a way that he hadn't noticed from the fear which had obscured everything but the scent, the tail and the ears which represented an old enemy. Even now, he admitted that his features, though canine, did look soft. And Kiku loved soft things. He had two rabbits, a guinea pig, and a fluffy little dog. Going home to take care of them was one of the highlights of the day.

Maybe, just maybe, Herakles would allow him to stroke them. If not, well there were times when he was napping that he could catch him unaware. He had once done it unmeaningly, he could do it again.

He knew the words before he said them. It was a betrayal of all the fear he held innately inside him as a prey, but right now Kiku was too drugged on the opium-scent going between them.

"After I post this, I'm heading home. If you are not busy, I'm making Shabu-Shabu for dinner tonight," Kiku said.

"Hmm?" Herakles looked up. When he blinked away the sleepy stupor he had fallen into, his tail began to wag. A little voice inside him told Kiku to fear, the gift from his tribe. He brushed the fear aside as illogical the little panic when he got on the bus.

After all, blood wasn't everything

That is so sweet! And lol, I laughed a little at the line about foxes. The whole thing was almost melancholic, which was nice because it helps lead insight to Kiku's thoughts about wolves and foxes. I love that Kiku's so smart and somewhat calculating whilst being quiet, while Greece is so warm and friendly to Kiku alone, and aggressive to others.

It's really nice that they overcame their differences in blood to be together too.

I think the above anon was talking about Arashi no Yoru Ni. It's even dubbed on youtube! ♥

Authoranooooon~. This is so freaking adorable, but melencholy, but sweet but sad asdfghjkl, I have not the words. As far as I'm concerned, this is one of the most in character things I've read for this couple. As the Japanese say, わい~すごく可愛いわよ!

Thank you very much for this adorabbly sweet gem for a fic.

(And 'm pretty sure that I fell in love with Greece. I need a boyfriend like that. And Japan's accidental kiss, omg, so cute.)

*loves on you*

This was just as cute and sweet as I was hoping it would be (Greece is just TOO CUTE for words, especially with that tail wagging of his), but at the same time it wasn't mindless fluff. There was actual discussion about the "wolves and sheeps are 'natural' enemies" and related prejudice, which made me happy, and little humorous tidbits like France's cameo and the "like one of the rabbit tribe" crack.

I also liked how you portrayed Japan - he's stoic, but not to the point of emotionlessness or immunity to love. He seemed to get over his initial fear of Greece rather quickly, but then again, how can anyone (bar Turkey and anyone else who tries to hit on Japan) stay afraid of Greece for long? And there's still that bit of wariness in Japan even at the very end, but it's clear that he's willing to give Greece a chance and that Greece isn't going to violate it.

So yes; in short, I really liked this fill. It strangely reminds me of your fill for nekomata!Greece - at least, it has the same kind of 'fairy tale' feel in spite of the surprising attention paid to detail, if that makes sense. (You do still have a few typos, though. Sorry, but I felt obliged to point that out too. XD)

AWWWWW When I saw the line "sheepdog" I don't know why but I think I MELTED. What an idea.. I just... awwwwwwwwww I LOVE THIS. Its so fun, that Hera sleeps so deep Kiku thought he was dead (I'm not surprised that hasn't happened more...). And the whole "rabbit tribe" quip about Roma *gigglesnorts* of course.
