Dál Riata was a tiny nation that, in trying to prove that he didn't need his brother, Ireland, to protect him, travelled to Briton to try and become a bigger nation there only to disappear during a battle with Northumbria.
A couple of centuries later and England is travelling north to deal with Northumbria once and for all only to discover that some kid has beaten him to the kill. Recongnizing the signs of a nation and seeing advantages on how to take the whole of the north of the isle, England takes the boy in, promising to protect him and names him Scotland.
He didn't plan on falling for the skittish child or Ireland's attempt to reclaim him.
What you wish to imply Scotland has been through is up to anon but, as Dál Riata, he was repeatedly raided by, amongst others, Pictland, Northumbria and Vikings so he will be scared of what most older nations want from him.
