At Word's End -- Part 1b

(Anonymous) 2010-01-23 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Is he in his study, Francis?" he asked sharply as Francis reached him and already had half an arm around his shoulder. He felt bad for being so cold but he had no choice for the moment maybe later his father would allow them to spend a bit of time together before sending him packing.

"Is that anyway to greet an old friend, Alfred?" Francis said with a frown. "...and father."

"I'm sorry Francis," Alfred said softly and he meant it, but he shook the arm off his shoulder with a quick movement. "But I'm not here for a reunion, I'm here on business. I received a message from Matthew about Arthur's latest scheme..." he spat out the words his anger returning. "Is he in there?"

"Yes, your *father* is in his study," Francis said wearily. "But he is in an important meeting."

"Isn't he always," Alfred's snapped in irritation and he took in the way Francis was fidgeting and how his eyes kept drifting towards the door at the end of the room. Realization hit him in that moment just what sort of important meeting his father must be involved in. "He's in there isn't he...that Northern King guy that Matthew is being forced to marry."

"King Ivan and your father are in the middle of discussing the final arrangements for the part of the wedding that will take place here in Britannia," Francis said. "But your brother is not being forced to marry anyone...he agreed to the arrangement."

"I'm sure he wasn't given much of a choice," Alfred said darkly. "We all know how easy Matthew is to please everyone...Arthur probably manipulated him into saying yes."

"Your father would never do anything like that and you know it," Francis said harshly. "You haven't been here you don't know any of the particulars...you should not pass judgment on us so easily."

"Yes I wasn't here," Alfred agreed darkly. "I couldn't protect Matthew from this then but I can do it now. If they're still discussing details that means the final contract has not yet been signed and Matthew can still get out of it. I will make him see reason...I will make them both see reason..." He pulled away from France's grasp and turned and headed towards the door at the end of the room.

"Alfred..." Francis called after him. "Please don't be too hard on your father, he has his reasons for this..."

Alfred paid Francis' words little attention as he stalked across the room. The door to his father's inner office was partially open. Just enough for him to see a slice of the room inside, the window and his desk and the edge of one of the cushioned chairs that sat in front of it though he couldn't see the whole thing from his position. His father was pacing back and forth across the room his voice agitated and upset as he moved. Good his father should be upset for what he was pulling with Matthew.

He lifted his hand to push open the door and storm in but snippets of the conversation his father was having with the other, unseen, occupant of the room caught his attention. He didn't catch everything it faded in and out as his father moved but it was enough to make Alfred pause. He was curious about things that happened in his families lives over the past five years. Maybe he could discover his father's reasons for arranging this marriage when he'd never seemed to interested in doing anything of the sort before with either of them, though arranged marriages among the kingdoms were more common then love matches.

"You're absolutely sure about this?" his father asked his voice laced with frustration and confusion.

"Da, positive," the answer came from the unseen Northern King. His voice was heavily accented and almost impossible to decipher. Alfred leaned forward to try and catch what he could. "I received it from a most reliable source..." he words became jumbled together with the accent and Alfred was unable to catch them all they moved so quickly. "I have no doubts...I trust it to be correct..."

"I don't understand..." his father's voice continued to fade in and out as he paced. "He hasn't shown...what do they...I will not stand for it!"

"Then something must be done to..." the Northern King's voice disappeared into more indecipherable accents.

Alfred strained to hear the next bits of the conversation as his father stopped his movement and leaned up against his desk out of sight. Their voices grew serious and low as they continued to discuss and plan whatever it was that seemed to be taking up the most of the conversation. Finally his father's voice became loud and clear again as he moved around to the back of his desk. Alfred had to duck backwards quickly in order to not be seen.

"So it's settled then," his father said his voice rough and resigned. "There is no other course that can be taken. I wish..." he trailed off and sighed heavily. "It does not matter what I wish I must do what is best for him..."

"Then we must move ahead with the finalization of the contract...." the Northern King said sounding pleased with the outcome.

Alfred jolted forward curiosity about the conversation vanishing in the anger that welled up and threatened to overflow him. He burst into the room, a moment of pleasure snaked through him as he startled his father into dropping the parchment in his hand. They looked at each other for a long moment surprise, relief and something else flashed across his father's face for a instant before it was locked behind the familiar face of steely calm. That caused Alfred's anger to jolt back to the forefront.

"I'm not going to allow you to do this!" he snapped crossing the room to face his father face to face across the desk. He smacked his hands downs on the desk and glared viciously at his father.

I really like this so far, an hope to see more in the future! You've set up an intriguing start, and I can't wait to see how Alfred and Ivan interact with one another.

One thing though--There are a few odd turns of phrases in this that make the story harder to understand as well as a few grammar mistakes.

Looking forward to more~!

capcha: political blockade. Well, that's what Alfred is trying to do, capcha!
