Re: Imperial!Japan, Communist!Russia, etc- How do you portray them?

Usually, I'm not overly fond of portrayals that differ wildly from their 'canon' personality. I know that it's hard to write more serious fics with canon personalities, but too often I see them written as completely two dimensional villains with no resemblance to the characters I like. So I don't really like the crazy or overtly-sadistic interpretations of them. (Although crazy is a pretty broad term, so.)

That being said, imperial nations are not exactly nice either. They're power hungry and brutal and etc. Honestly, as long as it seems as if the author put thought into how to portray them, and it seems realistic for the character to do whatever, I'm okay with it. If I'm trying to portray a character, part of the fun for me is trying to figure out a way to figure out how the history gels with the character, and how much they reflect state actions versus their people.

For example, I reconcile the history of pirate/empire!England with the character in that he's super determined to prove himself and be the best, is super lonely and wants cute kids to help his economy grow and also because he just likes kids, and set pirates on Spain partly because he wasn't that rich yet and mostly because to him Spain was, like, the Empire from Star Wars. So I like pirate/imperial England like canon England only with huge ruthless streak, much less manners, and yeah, cynical pretty much fits.

For state vs people, Communist Russia is large, cold, with scary foreign policies and a whole lot of propaganda floating around in his head. Personally, I prefer it if he's written as being not completely Soviet Union-ised, because he's Russia the nation and a lot of his own people were suffering, too. (Kind of like how Germany =/= Nazis). But canonically, he's pretty scary already, so I'm okay if people write him as a little unhinged as long as they don't make him into a cardboard villain.

TL;DR I'm okay with most interpretations as long as it seems the writer has actually thought about it and hasn't made them into caricatures of cartoon villains as an attempt at grimdarkness.
