Suppose an anon wanted to give writing smuttier stuff a try, but likes to know the mechanics of how things work so they don't sound like the complete and total virgin smut writer they are... where would they go about learning stuff like this? (Not so much sex, but how things (toys? - vibrators, cock rings, etc) work.)

This is probably the wrong place to ask, but I'm not really sure where the right place would be. If you do know, please direct me there.

Although I haven't had the need to use it. But even just lurking it should prove fruitful for you.

Other than that, looking at descriptions of toys, Google, and reading porn should help. Just be sure you find lots of different sources so you know what you're reading is right! A lot of porn out there is incorrect, so if you're not sure on how a cock ring or a prostate massager works then Google is your best friend.

Being a female who writes yaoi, I obviously don't have any first hand experience at what sex between two males feels like, or what having a penis feels like (and being a virgin even what having one inside me feels like), so I've learned mostly through reading lots of porn. Lots and lots of porn. XD And if I don't understand the mechanics of something, I look it up. (I have done a loooooot of research on how sounding works, for example, because I wanted to fill a prompt asking for it. I also have perused many an online sex toy shop for ideas for previous prompts. And for lulz. Those descriptions and names can be freaking funny.)

Just remember that sex is a very sensual ting, so focus on how things feel rather than what every single thing each person involved does. And don't rush it unless the sex is supposed to be fast paced, and even then, don't gloss over it and have it be done in a paragraph or two. Taking your time and showing what the characters are feeling helps avoids the dreaded "IKEA sex" feeling and adds emotional weight to your writing, even if it doesn't go beyond lust, which is what you want! And practice! Write smutty oneshot scenes until you think you've got the mechanics down, and try to keep what you're doing as vivid in your mind's eye as possible to cut down on "He's got a hand in his hair, one on his cock, and one cupping his ass? Since when does he have three hands?" and "that doesn't bend that way!" accidents that tend to plague inexperienced smut writers. (Editing helps this a lot, so edit heavily. I know it's a pain, but it's more of a pain to find out you've got a massive mistake AFTER you've posted...)
