Using 'azure' or 'sapphire' or 'cerulean' for blue when you can just say blue gets boring after a while and makes readers think you've just picked up a thesaurus without a second thought. Of course we don't want to read blue over and over again in the same sentence, but sometimes simply saying 'blue' is the best thing to do. 'He silently ate the disgustingly mushy noodles while he stared broodingly out the quickly disintegrating window while the heavily falling rain splattered loudly against the startlingly white window pane' - unnecessary and annoying most of the time. Know what your verb means - Taiwan 'masticating' Germany's mouth is not hot, it's scary.
8) Consistency and logic - What happened to Finland's socks from the first part? Why isn't he wearing them anymore? Why is Switzerland suddenly behind Australia? Wasn't he standing right in front of him in the previous line? Why is Norway suddenly eating peanuts? I thought you said he had a peanut allergy in the first part? How can North Italy pick up the chicken, the cat and the puppy all with separate hands?
Say you've got your fill. It's decent, you've reread and edited it, had a beta do their thing, your characterisation is decent and isn't hugely ooc or anything, whatever -
1) Know what you're doing, post in the right places. Generally people appreciate it and nothing disrupts their inclination to read your fill if everything is correctly posted. This includes posting in the Past Fills post and on the Fill List.
2) Think of a punchy, unique, punny, etc title and include it in the fill list when you post there. Sometimes one worded titles work, sometimes they don't - sometimes a fill called 'Rouge' can be eye-catching, sometimes 'Antidisestablishmentarianism' can be eye-catching. Sometimes long titles work, sometimes they don't. For example, I'm not going to read a fill entitled 'France and Hungary Make Babies Because Greece Wanted Them To'. Maybe for the lulz, but if I'm completely sober, no. If it's a funny title, it's much more eye-catching and I'm more inclined to read it. Taking artistic license to tweak and make up words may also be eye-catching. Playing with words, phrases, 'The Dark Side of the Spoon' - usually puns are eye-catching.
3) Notice which day has the most activity, both with posting fills and with readers. If you post on a more active day then you'll get more readers. I guess weekends are when most people have time off so that's a logical time to post, though I could be horribly wrong or something.
4) Include a little summary of the fill in the Fills List. Not the whole summary, just a little 'Turkey and China dress Denmark in drag and let him loose in Monaco' - especially if it's humourous or an original idea/take on a idea will probably get more readers and thus more comments if it's an enjoyable fill.

er ah, this is just word-vomit I've been meaning to work out of my system, I don't even follow my own advice but I hope this helps a little?
