Re: Imperial!Japan, Communist!Russia, etc- How do you portray them?

Honestly, for me it varies from fic to fic. My standard one for Russia though is I treat the Soviet Union as a split personality. That way I can still use a lot of the dark stuff from the Soviet Union, but not making Russia completely the big bad villain.

As for Imperial Japan... well, I have never written him but that time period is the entire reason I won't ship Japan with any of the other Asian nations.

On Deanoning...

(Anonymous) 2013-07-12 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
This anon has seen other anons with this dilemma, and is going to have this dilemma soon, so wanted other anons opionion on the subject.

When it comes to deanoning, what is a good point to deanon? It's usually encouraged to deanon, mainly near the end. Which is good when it's something like a one shot. However, when doing a fill that is really long (or something past ten parts, I guess), how do you feel is best to go at it? Deanon in the middle of the fill? Wait until the end anyways?

I don't mind waiting till I'm done with the fill, my only problem with that would be the concern of spamming the inboxes of people that follow me on fanfiction.net with 15 or so chapters.

Comments?

I always de-anon when the fic is done. In case of long stories, I post it backdated on Livejournal all at once and then do slower updates on FF.Net and AO3, something like one chapter per day or even slower. That way, I won't spam anyone, but those who don't want to wait for updates also have the option of reading it on LJ.

If it's a multiparter, I don't see a problem with deanoning before you finish it.

...where is this policy written down? I've been on the meme for years and this is the first I hear of it. A quick scanning of the rules page brings up nothing.

I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but oh well.
I'm looking for a fill I found a while ago but have now lost the link to. It was a France/England watersports fill. If anyone could give me the link I would be grateful.

Re: Imperial!Japan, Communist!Russia, etc- How do you portray them?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-13 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Usually, I'm not overly fond of portrayals that differ wildly from their 'canon' personality. I know that it's hard to write more serious fics with canon personalities, but too often I see them written as completely two dimensional villains with no resemblance to the characters I like. So I don't really like the crazy or overtly-sadistic interpretations of them. (Although crazy is a pretty broad term, so.)

That being said, imperial nations are not exactly nice either. They're power hungry and brutal and etc. Honestly, as long as it seems as if the author put thought into how to portray them, and it seems realistic for the character to do whatever, I'm okay with it. If I'm trying to portray a character, part of the fun for me is trying to figure out a way to figure out how the history gels with the character, and how much they reflect state actions versus their people.

For example, I reconcile the history of pirate/empire!England with the character in that he's super determined to prove himself and be the best, is super lonely and wants cute kids to help his economy grow and also because he just likes kids, and set pirates on Spain partly because he wasn't that rich yet and mostly because to him Spain was, like, the Empire from Star Wars. So I like pirate/imperial England like canon England only with huge ruthless streak, much less manners, and yeah, cynical pretty much fits.

For state vs people, Communist Russia is large, cold, with scary foreign policies and a whole lot of propaganda floating around in his head. Personally, I prefer it if he's written as being not completely Soviet Union-ised, because he's Russia the nation and a lot of his own people were suffering, too. (Kind of like how Germany =/= Nazis). But canonically, he's pretty scary already, so I'm okay if people write him as a little unhinged as long as they don't make him into a cardboard villain.

TL;DR I'm okay with most interpretations as long as it seems the writer has actually thought about it and hasn't made them into caricatures of cartoon villains as an attempt at grimdarkness.

Is this the one you're looking for? If it isn't (pretty sure I read another one not so long back with England wanting to be the one getting pissed on) the England kindex (https://delicious.com/england_kindex) is pretty useful, as I got the other link through there. Can't find it now, of course (Murphy's Law), but it should be floating somewhere around the oral sex/rough sex tags I've been looking at recently.

Re: Imperial!Japan, Communist!Russia, etc- How do you portray them?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-14 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed on both counts.

Russia will be Russia. That is all I will say about him.

As for Japan... It's really hard to write him. I've tried so many portrayals and they all don't seem right. On another note, I imagine Imperial Japan to be someone loyal to his King and loyal to his country, and therefore, is blind to what he's doing- brainwashed, if you will, to throw his life away for the emperor, because the emperor means all and is superior to all others. Like Kamikaze pilots. Heavily influenced with propaganda. I usually go with the 'exasperated' route when he's dealing with his 'colonies'- if that makes sense. He tries to treat his 'guests' (even though in reality, he's occupying them) well, denying that he's actually 'occupying' them, that he's doing all this terrible stuff in his occupied countries. ( Because even in RL, Japan never REALLY apologized for WWII and from what I've heard, they usually sweep WWII under the carpet during history class. (Any Japanese people out there? Can you please confirm or disprove this? I apologize if this isn't true.)) So. Japan. I say the 'Polite act' all the way through.

And just because: Like the first commenter, I don't ship him with any of the Asian countries because of this time period, too. I can't imagine him with China or Korea. And I'm a person who quite literally ships EVERYTHING.

As for North Korea (Because the last commenter covered Empire!England well) , I see him as a communist, pure and simple. Though he might have been unwilling at first, he's a communist now. I imagine him as a silent, militaristic individual- Insults everything Capitalist, insults America, says he poisoned Korea, etc. Though it's hard to imagine him hating on South Korea, though. I like to think he misses his brother once in a while. I don't really know how to portray him in words, though. His character changes a lot for me. (Yes, if you don't know by now, I'm a Asia-centric writer.)

Actually, for all the countries- I imagine them as 'Having no choice'. They're just 'tools' for the humans, something that exists for diplomatic reasons, something like a machine. There's a reason why they go out on the war front instead of sitting behind a desk- they are the personification of their people totaled, not the personification of the government they have at the moment. Take Nazi Germany. If Germany (As in its personification) actually existed, I doubt he'd have any sway in Hitler's decisions. Nations are kinda 'In the shadows' people in my mind- They leave the politics to the humans and they follow whatever outcome. They are the people. Therefore, in conferences, they might provide the input of the whole population in general (If that's possible) but in battles, they fight with the people.

Like this, I imagine that Nazi Germany was just following Hitler's orders, because that's what nations do. Leave the government to the politicians and leaders. They may try to dissuade their leader, but if that doesn't work, it's not like they could say 'Screw it,' because ultimately- they're the people of the nation, and said people of their nation are under the government. Therefore, they are under the government also, and ultimately, their leader. It is hard to see people saying "Screw it" in front of their leader's faces unless it's a full blown revolution. There may be voices of discontent, but in Nazi Germany's case, all discontent was squashed, and most supported Hitler anyway, so I'd also imagine Germany looked up to him as a leader(Or something similar)- But I don't think his personality would have gone all psycho just because he looked up at him as his leader.

SO. SHORT VER:

I'm rambling here, and I'm pretty sure what I just said doesn't make any sense at all, but what I ultimately want to say is that the Nation's personality and their government may be linked, but in most cases, their personality will represent their people's views, not their current government. Or maybe, their personality is their personality, and their government is their government, no relation- though they may be influenced by it.

Sorry for the long post.

Haven't you heard of the Edward Snowden affair? It sucked the entire world's attention to it. Very much of interest to people interested in international affairs.

However, it's all very uncertain what precisely is going on. Every few days something new happens or casts doubt on a previous belief. Far too soon to really understand and absorb.

I think it's hard to focus on fictional international bitching when there's real stuff going on.

LOL

I really doubt that's it.

Re: Imperial!Japan, Communist!Russia, etc- How do you portray them?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-15 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll only speak to communist Russia because I haven't written the others!

In terms of whether there should be some amount of conflict in his mind between leadership and people: in general yes, but then I think that in general that goes for all periods. Even right now, obviously, people don't all agree with Putin! On the other hand, I don't think you should need to make it a huge theme of every fic, if the fic isn't about things like identity and politics to begin with. In that case I tend to just write him somehow stretching between multiple sides without making much overt reference to specific policies, actions, etc.

I do think that nations in general skew a bit towards the populace, though, just because leadership is so transitory and easily shifted, and Russia would of course know that as well as anyone. He wouldn't overtly stand against his leaders without reason such as a popular backing (so, was he involved in the February Revolution - maybe! but would he try to kill/hurt Stalin - not so much), but at the same time I don't think he'd be cynically unaffected by so many people's deaths.

I easily see him as affected by ideology, though, and pretty good at explaining away certain actions made by himself of others in the name of achieving communist utopia... The "Bloody Sunday" strip shows (to me) that he is able to get caught up in the spirit of the time. While he does genuinely want what's best for people (see: him helping try to build a canal, the whole sunflower dream), he's just also fairly susceptible to contemporary ideas of what "best" means, ideas that... end up not actually being that great (see: "become one with Russia" as an I-know-how-to-make-things-work-for-you concept that nonetheless totally disregards what other nations might actually want - because Russia knows best! :D)

(IDK what Himaruya based the become-one thing on, honestly, because I never know what history he actually knows; my guess is that it's just a riff on the idea of collectivism, but... I think it's decently rewarding as a character-study thing to look at it as a version of the policies of Russianization that became prevalent in the Soviet Union by the late 30s? like, Ivan wants everyone to be equal, but Ivan is more equal than others... for me his mind gets very very caught up in that kind of ideological confusion)

But I always try to stress that, while his actions are manipulative and unfair, he's not doing it consciously. He doesn't think of anything he's doing as actively bad - maybe he sometimes acknowledges that certain things are inconvenient or regrettable, but he wouldn't 100% willingly do something he thought was just awful and evil. Everything comes down to thinking he's taking real steps towards a better future. Like, if I were to break it down...

-he shoots people at Bloody Sunday (willingness to cooperate with leadership)
-but he cries while he's doing it (not a heartless asshole)
-"We don't want children who can't play nice, right?" (belief that he's working for the 'greater good'; but ALSO indicative of how easily he falls into justifying things based on contemporary ideology - in this case, autocracy)

And it's the same basic framework when you move into the Soviet period. He's not crazy or jaded or bullied into his actions. He thinks he's helping.

Human Names VS Nation Names?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Is it just me, or does anyone else shy away from using nation names? Especially when writing about my own native country, it almost feels like - well, trespassing isn't the right word, but it's the only one I can come up with at the moment.

Also, which do you prefer to see while reading? I personally don't mind reading either, except for when I accidentally stumbled upon Hetalia completely by accident and I was all... Who is this guy and why is he named after a country?

Re: Human Names VS Nation Names?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
I shy away from country names in D/s fic, because of the implications. Other fic, I don't mind which names are used, but when it comes to BDSM and D/s, I really prefer human names to be used, even if the story is still canonverse. I also like the way that using human names can be used to indicate intimacy between characters, too.

Re: Human Names VS Nation Names?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
I prefer human names in a nation fic, and it's always a minus point in my eyes if such a story uses human names instead. This is perhaps an unfair stance, but I tend to assume that people who use human names in a nation fic aren't interested in portraying the characters as nations in the first place and are more interested in shipping and trying to erase the ways in which the characters are different from humans. It just sounds wrong to me to use human names when nation names are always used in canon.

Re: Human Names VS Nation Names?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, while I can see why people might feel awkward using them, I much prefer nation names. Partly because of the simplicity - not everyone has canon human names, and it gets confusing trying to figure out who is who - and partly because I don't buy into the whole nations want to be human and thus human names are more intimate/reflect them better theory. I personally think nations are nations and love being nations and are proud of the names they bear.

It makes sense to me if they use human names in public or whatever, though. And I don't actually mind human names, especially in AU's. I just like nation names better.

Re: Human Names VS Nation Names?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I prefer Nation names. It seems to me in canon that they're perfectly comfortable with who they are, so I've always thought of human names as something they only use if they need to. Like a mask, if you will. Not to mention that a lot of characters don't have official human names. It did feel odd in the beginning, but I've grown used to it.

Re: Human Names VS Nation Names?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed with all of this except the "makes sense to use human names in public." The fact that they always call each other by nation names in canon even when around humans suggests to me that it isn't something they're concerned about regardless of if their existence is meant to be a secret. Characters getting antsy about being called by name in public is always a minus to me.
