Paranormal Nights - 2B

Alfred and Matthew exchanged a look, then ushered him in to sit next to Matthew, who immediately wrapped him up in a hug. “Oh god Feli, I’m so sorry to hear that. Does anyone know anything?”

“N-No, nothing. It’s like, one minute he was there, then the next… Poof!” Feliciano threw his hands in the air, shaking his head in disbelief. “And the worst part of all is that there were splatters of blood on the back door of the car, but no signs of a struggle.” He buried his face in his hands next, and began to sob. “The door was open, and the bags still inside, but no Lovino!”

He continued to speak, but they couldn’t make out what he was saying. Matthew did his best to comfort him, while Alfred looked around until he spotted Antonio, Lovino’s boyfriend, manning the coffee maker. Waving his hand frantically, he got his attention, and soon he joined them, crouching down next to Feliciano and speaking to him in low Spanish. After a minute, he calmed down enough to catch his breath. Antonio looked over at Alfred, his eyes dark with worry. “Have you seen or heard anything suspicious this morning?”

“No, sure haven’t.” Alfred shook his head, calling up the drive over, and not recalling anything out of the ordinary.

Matthew was still hugging Feliciano, rocking him slowly. “Give it some time, I’m sure someone will come up with some kind of evidence. Maybe he wandered off into the woods or something, and got lost. He’ll be found soon.”

Antonio nodded. “But for now, Feli, we need to get back to work, okay? We’re short-handed without Lovi, and it’s getting time for lunch to be served.”

“You’re right, I guess.” Feliciano did his best to smile, Alfred returning it with one of his own. Nodding to himself, he gave Matthew a hug in return, and got out of the booth. “Right, thanks you guys.”

“Anytime Feli.” Matthew was frowning now, thinking about something. “Say, you said you’re short-handed, right?”

“Mmm-hmm, two of our servers called out sick, leaving me and Antonio to do all the work.” The bell above the door rang, signaling another customer. He sighed, scratching his head. “I don’t know how we’re going to manage.”

The other agreed, waving at whoever had walked in the door. “Feli and I have our work cut out for us. We’d close the diner to help with the search for Lovino, but if we did then we’d lose business. And business isn’t booming as it is.”

“I can help.” Matthew raised his hand, drawing the attention of the other three. “I worked in a restaurant in Montreal during college serving tables.”

“Oh no, no no! I couldn’t possibly ask you to do that.” Feliciano flapped his hands, flustered. “Although I am grateful for the offer and all, it just wouldn’t be right to ask you to give up your time to spend with Alfred just to help me and Antonio, and I’m sure you have much better things to be doing besides being cooped up in here with us all day, and…”

Matthew held up his hand again, cutting him off. “Feli, it’s no problem, honestly. I’d be more than happy to help. Plus, Al doesn’t want me fussing over him all day,” at this Alfred stuck his tongue out at him while toying with a napkin, “and besides that, what kind of friend would I be if I didn’t help you in your time of need?”

Antonio, eyes shining, grabbed the hand still held out and pressed it to his heart. “Matthew, I would be honored and forever in your debt if you would stay to help us out.”

Nodding after another moment of hesitation, Feliciano smiled a bit more and agreed. “Well, if you insist, then I’d be glad to have you on board.”

While they had been talking, Alfred’s thoughts had trailed back to the night before, and the disturbing phone call they had received. In the background, the sounds of muffled screaming and crying… could it have been Lovino?

Before he had time to think more on it, however, his thoughts were interrupted by another voice, this one terse and sharp.

“Alfred!”

Looking over the back of the booth, Alfred spotted Kiku standing in the doorway, a serious look on his face. “Yo, Honda! What’s up?”

The look on his face was stony. “We have a problem.”

He tilted his head, while Matthew, Feliciano, and Antonio carried on talking. “What kind of problem, dude?”

“That guy… the one from last night. He called again.”

Excusing himself from the table (the other three had started discussing how to properly bake bread), Alfred rushed over to Kiku, looking just as serious. “You mean the creepy one? Or the Russian?”

“The creepy guy.” Kiku grabbed his arm and drug him outside, the gray sky and chilly wind making the surrounding forest look dark and ominous. “When the boss showed up at the station this morning, there was a message on the machine.”

“And it was from him, right?” Alfred leaned back against the side of the diner, the doorway helping to shield him from the breeze a little. “Well, what did it say?”

Honda gazed out across the parking lot at the woods, shivering. “H-He wanted to speak to you. There was no return number, however. And when the boss checked,” Kiku trailed off for a moment, another shiver passing through him, “When he had the call traced to its source, it led to an address that hasn’t had telephone service since the seventies.”

Alfred gave him a look. That meant it was impossible to make a phone call from the location. Back then, telephones were wired in to the house from the pole. There were no jacks or wireless connections. “So, why did he want to speak with me?”

“He didn’t say that, either.” Kiku looked down at his feet, then back to Alfred. “I don’t like this.”

The other nodded. “Yeah, me neither. But, you know what? I’m curious about him, either way.”

“Oh lord, here we go again.”

Alfred grinned. “Yep, I’m going a-huntin’. You in, or what?”

Kiku sighed, and shrugged. “Sure, why the hell not?”

With that, Alfred rushed back in the diner and grabbed his jacket, telling his brother where he was going, and rushed out the door. He hopped in Kiku’s Landrover, and they both drove off, with Matthew standing outside the diner and shouting “You haven’t even had breakfast yet!”

Once they were down the road a ways, the two began to make plans.

“Okay, you have the address, right?”

Kiku nodded, pulling a piece of paper out of his pocket and handing it to Alfred. “It’s about a thirty minute drive up the highway, only a mile outside of Chitina."

Nodding, Alfred pulled out his phone and dialed a number. “First, we need to stop by my dad’s house and grab a few things. We don’t want to go out there unarmed.”

“Right. I also had an idea, if you’re willing to let him come along.”

Alfred looked at him, finger paused above the send button. “Like who?”

“You’re favorite person in the entire world.” Kiku grinned when Alfred groaned. “He’s the best person we could ask for to bring along. He knows the area very well, and could be valuable in our search.”

“Seriously dude, we’re just going to check out an old address.” He groaned again when Kiku only arched an eyebrow.

“Please? Pretty pretty please?”

“He can help us spot anything abnormal that we may miss. The more the merrier, right?”

“Augh! Fine, fine, we’ll stop and get him. But first…,” he pressed send, only waiting a moment before the call was answered.

“Whatcha want, boy?”

“Hi to you too, dad.” Alfred glared out the passenger window, hearing the slur in the other’s voice.

“I said whatcha want?”

“I need to borrow a gun. And probably a flashlight.”

His father made a sound like he was disgusted. “Let me guess, you’re going spook hunting.” A pause, then “Isn’t it a little early in the day for that?”

“This isn’t a paranormal investigation, dad. Honda and I are going to check out the source of some unwanted phone calls to the station.”

His father’s tone lightened then. “Got someone giving you trouble up there?”

“Yeah, something like that.”

A grunt was his answer, followed by the sound of a lock being turned. “Well, come on then. I’ll have your stuff ready to go when you get here.”

“Thanks, dad. See you in a bit.”

The line went dead, signaling the end of the call. Sighing, Alfred put his phone back into his coat, continuing to study the scenery. Kiku was silent, feeling bad for his friend. The two had their problems, and struggled to maintain a stable father-son relationship. But as Alfred got older, his father seemed to be growing more and more distant. He didn’t envy him his position, but he had all his sympathy.

“Hey, isn’t the nutter’s house closer than my dad’s place?”

Kiku thought for a moment. “Yeah, in fact it’s right up here on the right.”

Alfred nodded. “Well, we might as well stop by there first. No point in looping back.”

Nodding too, Kiku slowed and pulled into the driveway that led to an adorable looking cabin back off the road. “How in the world does he get those flowers to grow in this climate?”

“Ah, didn’t you know? He has a fairy army that uses it’s magic to make them grow.” They both snickered, making their way to the front of the house.

A/N: It looks like I’m going to have to fight to get this written. It’s like people know when I have something to do. Anyway, look out for the next chapter coming soon. And thanks for reading so far. Also, anyone who can guess who Alfred's dad is gets internet cake. If you guess who mom is too then you get cake and ice-cream.
