Sculpted Angels (4/Infinity)

"She's not serious, is she?" Alfred asked. In the ensuing silence that answered all, he asked, "Has she got an understudy?"

"She's never missed a performance before," Firmin said with a hopeless air. "Or if she has, we've cancelled the performance. But we can't cancel a premiere! It's financial suicide."

"Francis Bonnefoy is in Paris," Meg Giry said tentatively.

"Does he know the role?" Andre said, and simultaneously, Firmin said, "He can't replace La Carlotta!"

"He knows the role," Madame Giry said. "Remember the note, Messieurs."

"...Why are you here?" Firmin said.

"You made me the ballet director," Giry sighed. "Because your real one left, remember? I can find Monsieur Bonnefoy in time for the premiere, if you so wish."

"I was under the impression he was still with the Paris Opera," Alfred frowned.

"Well, he's been let go recently..." Andre said, and seeing the vicomte's immutable expression, blustered onwards. "There was some difficulty with him that couldn't be overcome in any other way."

"We'll talk later," Alfred assured. "At the premiere tonight, non? I'll be there to watch."

"Ah, yes, of course," Firmin said carefully. "Shall we meet for dinner beforehand?"

"No thank you," Alfred said frostily, and left.

The sky was just beginning to darken over Paris, and the gaslights were just being lit by the skinny man who could pass for a lamppost himself. Alfred smiled and watched as the first star came out. Soon the hazy light from the lampposts would obscure the night sky save for the moon, which would become a chalky smudge of little illumination.

"Your carriage, sir," said the coachman, who took his cane and helped him into the cabin. Alfred smiled absently, and lay his head on the cushion of his plush seat, eyes closed.

"Good Lord, you shouldn't embark on such journeys while you're still recuperating," was the unexpected sigh. Alfred's eyes snapped open and he looked to his front. His brother (the Comte) was sitting there with his lady-killing smile.

"What are you doing here?" Alfred asked shocked, and pressed his handkerchief against his forehead. "You scared the wits out of me. Have you nothing better to do?"

"It's not my fault the coachman let me in on principle," Mathieu shrugged. "Look at you, though. You look like the walking death. What on earth compelled you to go out?"

"Francis Bonnefoy is singing the lead in Hannibal tonight," Alfred confided, and managed to calm his nerves sufficiently enough to sit up and kiss his brother's cheek. "And it's been a while since I attended the opera."

"Well, it's been a while since you've were out of the house for anything," Mathieu said with a fond and condescending smile that Alfred hated when it came from everyone except his brother. "Be careful. Make sure dear little Francis doesn't make your heart over-palpitate. I can't believe that gawky boy is doing opera. Do you remember when you swam out into the sea to get his scarf?"

"Yes."

"Do you remember when you kissed him?" Mathieu asked slyly. Alfred coloured bright red and Mathieu laughed. "I bet you he remembers, too."

"We were children," Alfred said shortly, and signalled for his coachman to take them somewhere to eat. "The fact that you break out that little gem of an anecdote every time you want to embarrass me at a social doesn't mean that there was anything to that kiss."

"Of course not. Because when you kiss a Provencal boy, it's completely platonic and adorable. Had it been me, the rumour mill would have been powering the gaslights in Paris for years and years to come," Mathieu shrugged. "I suppose you want me to come and see Hannibal tonight as well."

"Can you?"

"As a matter of fact, I can," Mathieu grinned, and leaned back. "And people will think I'm culturally bankrupt if I don't attend once in a while. I could have painted, you know."

"Of course," Alfred smiled, and shut his eyes. "Wake me up when we reach the cafe."

Very much enjoying this, author anon! I like how you characterized Alfred and Matthew, it's refreshingly different.

I'm really enjoying this story so far. Methinks your interpretation of Alfred is especially refreshing.

I look forward to the rest of the story!
