Forever Mine Epilogue a/11

Six months later, Arthur held his last interview with the police.

“You’re sure this is what you want to do? We could put Mr. Jones under witness protection with you if you’d like,” Ludwig said for the umpteenth time since Arthur had brought up moving to America with Alfred two months ago.

“No, he’s been relocated already – I couldn’t do that to him,” Arthur answered. He was dressed immaculately in a collar shirt, slacks, and jacket even now that it was horribly hot in the summer heat, but he had to be professional for his last talk with the police. He had to really sell it and really convince them he could leave.

Ludwig sighed but nodded.

“You’re making a mistake,” Gilbert said, frowning. “Who knows when that psycho might pop up again?” He’d been in an awful mood ever since that one policeman had disappeared after going to Arthur Kirkland’s flat to inform him of the new murder. For a week or so, the police had been in a panic going through the policeman’s files because they were sure he must have stumbled on something related to the Leatherface Killer.

That had been a difficult week of questioning because Arthur was now the last person to have seen him, but Alfred had coached him through it. And at the end of the week, the entire investigation of that particular disappearance had turned 180 degrees because the digging had revealed instead, that the policeman in question had been involved in a shady deal with a drug ring. Now the police were sure he must be on the run or else had been killed by the drug ring, and that his particular disappearance had nothing to do with the Leatherface Murders at all.

Alfred couldn’t stop laughing about it after Arthur told him about that turn of events.

“I told you, you and I – we’re heroes!” Alfred had said. “Me more than you, of course, but you could catch up.”

“Don’t say that,” Arthur had said but let Alfred pull down for a kiss, tumbling him down onto the futon.

Ludwig was the one who rolled his eyes at Gilbert. “Arthur does have a point. Even if the Leatherface Killer turns up again, he’s never made another move on Arthur after the first time – it wouldn’t involve him,” he said.

“And he hasn’t turned up in six months now,” Arthur said. “I’ve got a flight to catch. If there’s nothing more?”

Ludwig nodded and came to shake Arthur’s hand. “Then thank you for cooperating with us all this time. I’m only sorry we couldn’t catch the man who did this to you,” he said.

Arthur shivered, but Ludwig didn’t notice.

Gilbert didn’t bother getting up from his chair. “Yeah, whatever,” he said.

Arthur had already sent most of his things ahead and now he only had a carry-on left which he’d brought with him to the station. The flat was taken care of, and so was Alfred’s house. He walked into the Bristol Bus and Coach Station, spacious and echoing, but stuffed with people at this time of day. The National Express headed for London was already loading passengers and Arthur left his carry-on in the luggage compartment and made his way onto the coach. He chose a window seat at the very back of the coach and breathed a sigh of relief. There were people talking all around him, a little boy bouncing on the cushions a few seats up. Arthur felt jittery and nervous. Only a few more hours now.

Arthur had started planning almost immediately after the death of the policeman. Alfred hadn’t wanted to change anything, but Arthur pointed out that with the sudden string of deaths in the last two weeks, they couldn’t stay. As careful as Alfred was, sooner or later, someone would see something – find something – that would lead back to him. Alfred was already planning to go work in the NASA internship program upon his early graduation, so Arthur made sure Alfred was on top of things. He hated being separated from Alfred at all, but he had let Alfred go to the United States for two more follow-up, formal interviews, and Alfred had gotten the offer.

When Arthur looked out of the window, it was splattered with raindrops and everything was smeared. Inside the coach, it was air conditioned, but Arthur knew that outside, it would be hot and humid and damp. England had miserable weather, but still, it was where Arthur had lived all his life, and he wasn’t excited to have to uproot and leave. Between that and leaving Alfred though, Arthur knew what he’d choose every time.

When he got off the bus and into Heathrow Airport, he took one last good look around. It might be a very long time before he got to come back to England again, but he couldn’t stay either. He went to check in, fast and easy – no one gave a second glance at his passport at all – and a half hour later, Arthur was safely boarding his plane.

It had taken the longest to arrange things on Arthur’s part. He had to go with Alfred – it was unthinkable not to – but he couldn’t just pick up from work immediately. More worrying, was the police. After the current string of murders, there was no way the police would let Arthur leave without at the very least going into witness protection.

So Alfred had to stop killing people, and maybe with the murders stopped, the police would relax and let Arthur go. That was the easiest part of all. As long as Arthur was with him, Alfred was good with self-control. It was a heady feeling knowing that Arthur was the one who controlled Alfred – he was the one who could make Alfred kill and make him stop all just by paying less or more attention to him.

Four months passed with no sign of any new murders at all and the Leatherface Killer faded from the news and media with no new murders and no new advancements in the investigations. That was when Arthur brought up moving to America with Alfred. He told the police that his lover was relocating for work and that Arthur intended to go with him. He did the same at work, and while both had been rather surprised by the decision, in the end, Arthur had been granted permission.

It just took a lot longer to settle things down and Arthur had to stay behind when Alfred went to Texas first. It had been an entire month since Arthur last got to see Alfred face-to-face. They talked on the phone every day and over webcam late into the night that left Arthur exhausted thanks to the time difference, but he’d rather go to sleep facing his laptop where he could see Alfred moving around their new apartment in Texas than go to sleep alone. He missed Alfred even when he was talking to him, wanting to see and touch him, and sometimes it was all Arthur could do not to take the first flight over to Texas to be with him, but it would ruin everything if he did.

It had been the most difficult month of Arthur’s life.

Arthur wasn’t sure when he dozed off on the plane ride, dreaming of blue eyes and golden hair and comfortable days under the sun, when the announcements came on.

“We have now arrived at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Please remain seated until the seatbelt sign turns off. Thank you for flying with us and we hope you have a good time here in Fort Worth, Texas.”

The airplane had pulled to a stop and Arthur unbuckled his seatbelt before the sign went off, already scrambling out of his seat for his carry-on. Around him, everyone else was also getting off, crowding the aisles and slowing things down until Arthur half wished he could just kill them so he could get out of this plane faster. Alfred was on the other side.

At least, he must be. Arthur had told Alfred the exact time his plane was scheduled to arrive and Alfred had promised to come pick him up. But they’d been apart an entire month now – things had been fine when they were together – but what if Alfred found someone else now that he’d been here for so long? It was America – Alfred’s home and where he was most comfortable. What if he’d hooked up with someone else? What if he got tired of Arthur? Would he really come to get Arthur?

When Arthur finally stepped out of the terminal, he’d already thought himself into a mild panic even though he’d talked with Alfred just last night. He immediately began scanning the crowd for familiar blue eyes and golden hair, verging on breakdown when he saw a lot of blonds, but no one who was Alfred. It had been a mistake after all, Arthur thought. He should never have let Alfred come alone to Texas. They should have just stayed in Bristol forever and just risk being caught, having Alfred kill more – anything as long as he didn’t lose Alfred.

“Arthur!”

Arthur turned and nearly collapsed with relief when he saw Alfred walking up to him, a bright grin on his face, even tanner now that he’d been working in Texas for a month.

“Alfred,” Arthur said, so relieved that even though he was conscious that they were in an airport full of people, Arthur dropped his carry-on and wrapped his arms around Alfred who held him so tight it was hard to breath for a moment.

“Missed you,” Alfred said, sounding happy and relieved.

Arthur clung for a moment longer, feeling his heartbeat slow down again. “Me too,” he said.

“How was it back in Bristol?” Alfred asked.

Now that Arthur was feeling less panicked and more himself again, he glared at Alfred and elbowed him until he stepped back. “How do you think it was?” Arthur snapped as he picked up his suitcase. He was still jittery and nervous and too pleased to see Alfred.

“Sorry, didn’t mean for you to have to stay so long,” Alfred said though he looked at least as pleased to see Arthur as Arthur was to see him.

“Never again,” Arthur took a deep breath and said.

Alfred beamed at him. “Never again,” he agreed. “And it’s fine now. The police don’t have a clue?”

“No,” Arthur said, and looked over at Alfred. It had been a month since they’d last seen each other, but Alfred was acting excited and less worked up about it than Arthur had expected. It had been the most awful month of Arthur’s life, but Alfred only seemed bright and happy as usual though it should have been just as difficult for Alfred. With their track record, a day was enough to make Arthur crazy – it had been an entire month now.

“Alfred, you didn’t… did you?” Arthur asked as they walked out of the airport and into the bright Texan sun.

It fit Alfred as he smiled, blue eyes bright like the sky and hair as gold as the sun.

Arthur had planned this to be their starting over. This time, when they moved, they could forget all about the past and all the things they’d done and leave it all behind. This was supposed to be their new beginning.

“You’ll like Texas,” Alfred said. “The Leatherface nickname – it’s perfect.”

I couldn’t resist that last little horror movie cliché open-ended ending. Sorry, I’ve got no sequel planned for this, but hopefully this epilogue more or less ties up the rest of the loose ends? Anyway, thanks to everyone who read this fill and commented! I hope it was satisfying to read and

I'm pretty sure I shouldn't be cheering for the psycho murderer and his co-dependant boyfriend. Oh, England/America, what do you do to me? Alfred is never going to stop killing, is he? I mean, I remember that he killed Arthur's pet back when he was a teenager so I really doubt that moving will make him any better.

Anyway, I loved this story. Well written, great characterizations, nice flow and creepy enough. Awesome job, anon!

By the way, I love the fact that Leatherface is now in Texas. My horror fangirl self is squeeing.

I keep picturing a sequel where FBI profilers of Criminal Minds gets involve in the case of the Leatherface Killer. I mean profiling this two would be very intriguing, ne?
