Always and Forever (1/3)
(Anonymous) 2010-11-25 11:35 am (UTC)(link)She sat there, with some fries in one hand, a stylus for her DS in the other and her mouth wrapped around a straw. She didn’t care what other people said, McDonalds was awesome. And sometimes it was the best place to just get away from the troubles of family and friends. Of course, the comfort food is also a plus.
There weren’t a lot of people there, it being after lunch but not quite dinner. It’s never quiet in a fast food restaurant and she was fine with that. Quiet wasn’t quite what she needed then. Hell, she didn’t even know what she needed.
All of a sudden there was a commotion at one of the entrances. Around twenty people entered, all shouting with different accents and sometimes different languages, a laughing blond man leading the way cheering about it being his turn to pick where they eat or something to that effect. Eventually the others seemed to resign themselves and looked at the menu board, each going up to order. The poor cashier seemed overwhelmed, especially when a huge man with a scarf was that a pipe?! came up to order.
She tried to pick out the nationalities. There was no way that any other than the one leading them was American. She could figure out a few. The Frenchman and the Englishman were easy enough, as well as some of the Asians. But she never was good at picking up on the differences of accents and was horrible at faces. Oh well.
Going back to munching on a fry, she tapped absently on the touch screen, mixing pins, feeding her characters, changing the threads… nothing that took too much concentration, but enough that she had zoned out from the world around her. Thus, when a person dropped down to sit next to her on the bench unexpectedly, she started and knocked her cup over, only for it to be caught and prevented from spilling by the one who had startled her.
“Sorry, about that! The names Alfred F. Jones, call me Al. I thought you looked like you could use some company.”
Well, this was interesting. She had no problem talking to strangers, but she didn’t just go up and sit next to them and start a conversation. Or expect them to. Still, she liked talking to people and this man was friendly and outgoing and really just didn’t feel like a stranger at all.
She introduced herself and offered him some fries. She thought he was going to kiss her for that.
“Not to be rude, Al, but don’t you want to eat with your friends?” She gestured with a hand at those he had come with. They were all sitting at tables close to each other, eating their orders. Some seem to be enjoying it, others…not so much. The group wasn’t looking over at her but she had the feeling that they were listening in.
“Nah, I talk to those guys all the time and they understand. You, however, are alone and not looking so happy. And I hate it when others aren’t happy so… mind telling me what’s wrong?”
She took a long drink, thinking about it. Should she lay her troubles out for this man? Personal things were, well, personal. Stuff she probably wasn’t supposed to share with others. Oh screw it, it’s not like she was going to ever meet him again.
“It’s a mixture of family troubles stemming from financial troubles stemming from family troubles, really. Parents got divorced, have pretty much driven each other bankrupt with lawyers and court over the past five years, now I can’t stand living with my mom and live full time with my unemployed dad who is only just now trying to get a job at all…” She found herself spilling out more than she expected. It was hard not to. She felt bad about it, everyone had troubles of their own and she didn’t want him to have to think about hers as well, but…he just sat there and listened and offered her a napkin every so often to wipe away little tears and snot and he just looked so sincere. Like her problems were his problems. Not really how a stranger should look. And so she continued.
“And the economy is in the hole and I have no idea when its getting better and I have no idea if I can accomplish what I want in life, and –and- and… yeah.” She finished up lamely, not knowing really what to say after that spiel.
Always and Forever (2/3)
(Anonymous) 2010-11-25 11:37 am (UTC)(link)He broke the silence. “Well, what do you want to accomplish in life?”
“I want to be a CSI. And yes, I know that it’s nothing like the show. It’s just something that I’ve always been interested in.” She gave a little smile at the next part. “And, well…I want to see the world.”
He grinned and from the corner of her eye she could see some of his companion’s heads lift towards their direction for a second. “Oh, see the world? Where?”
She thought about it. “I’m not really sure where. To different countries. I want to see different cultures, try different food, and meet different people. Make new friends and probably insult some along the way.” They both laughed a bit at that.
“But as for specific countries, hmmm… Italy, definitely. I want to visit Rome and see the birth place of Renaissance. Greece and its ruins and history have always been interesting to me. Paris, the City of Light. I’ll admit to being an anime nerd, so Japan is a must. Three years of Chinese class have made me long to see China. Lithuania, where my family came from. Most of Europe and Asia and South America and Australia and, well everywhere I guess. Oh! And England. My last name is Knight, so it’s kind of obvious where that is from.” Her smile had gotten wider and wider through her speech, getting more and more excited.
“England, huh?” He mused. “Well, that explains the eyebrows.” He poked her forehead and she pretended to bite his finger. Really, how had she gotten so friendly and familiar with this man?
He continued, “And where are you going to settle down? Have you thought about where you want to live after these travels?” It may have been her imagination, but he seemed a little…sad, asking that.
She didn’t have to even think about her answer. “America will always be my home. I will always come back here.” And before she could continue she was stunned by the look on his face. It was like pure joy had been made into a candy and he had just eaten a whole pack of the stuff. It made her smile even wider and she went on.
“Sure, I want to travel. But I love my country. I would never ever want to live anywhere else. Visit yes, live no. The US of A is where my heart is, I can’t leave that. We have freedom of speech, voting rights, democracy, and we are always changing and moving forward.” She didn’t know what was going on here, it was one thing to discuss wanting to travel the world, but another to go on and on about the sheer pride she had in her country. But something in that huge grin of his, in those blue, blue eyes made her continue.
“We are a people that are made up of the rest of the world. And yes, we go through hard times. We are going through hard times. But we’ve come out of them before and I truly believe that we will again. Congress may be ridiculous right now, but change will come. We have hate mongers like Glenn Beck on the air waves, but we also have those like Jon Stewart. And I may not like what some people have to say, but damnit, our Bill of Rights gives them the right to do so and I will not argue that!” Breathlessly, she gave a little laugh and tried to calm herself. “And the only time I would ever leave here for, say, Canada, is if that Palin woman somehow became president. And even that could only be for eight, well technically ten years max.”
She didn’t know what prompted her, but she grabbed his hands and looked straight into his eyes. “I will always, always come back.”
And before she could say anything more, she was caught up in a hug so tight she didn’t think she could break out of even if she wanted to. Against her hair she could hear a muffled “Thank you, thank you,” and was let go.
Once again, she really had no word for how Alfred looked other than, well…happy. And for some reason, she was happy too. Happier than she had been in a long while. Like she really felt that it would get better and everything would be okay. And without stopping to think about it she quickly gave a chaste kiss to his cheek and smiled. “Thank you for listening.”
Always and Forever (3/3) + Notes
(Anonymous) 2010-11-25 11:53 am (UTC)(link)“Say, do have another minute or so? I would like to introduce you to everyone!” There was no way that she was going to say no to that.
And so she was led to the diverse group, all of whom seemed to be finished or finishing up their meals. She knew that they had been listening in on her conversation, but that didn’t really matter. She was introduced to each, one by one. Knowing her luck with names, she was surprised that she seemed to be able to remember them a minute after hearing them. Finally, she knew she had to really leave.
Alfred gave her another hug in goodbye. “I hope to see you again! I’ll try to find you later if I’m the same area.”
She wrapped her arms around him before letting go. “Well, as I’ve said, eventually I’ll always be back here. Hell, I’ll probably always live in my beautiful Golden State.” A little girl in group, with blonde hair and a tan from a lot of beach sun gave her a huge grin.
She managed to say goodbye and forced herself to leave the restaurant, waving back at the group who were also saying their own various goodbyes. Some even seemed to say something about ‘keeping an eye out for you.’ She may have just been hearing things.
And thus with a final push of the handle, she left this strange group of people and her new friend.
But even after she got home, she still didn’t feel like he had left her.
Sorry for the bad writing everyone, I'm working to improve it.
Notes:
I really like McDonalds. And I know that it is bad for you, but I have always thought that was obvious. It's fine in moderation. And their fries are addicting. Freedom Fries B)
It's headcanon that sometimes after world meetings the Nations go out to eat together and they take turns getting to pick where they eat. America chooses a burger place every time.
The game I was playing is The World Ends With You. It's a current obsession of mine.
I know very little about my family history, other than my mother's side fled the Nazis from Lithuania and since my father's side is the Knight side, we assume that is English.
Glenn Beck is a superconservative who I believe tries to stir up as much hate that he can. Jon Stewart is the host of the Daily Show.
The max years for a president is in fact ten years. If the previous president dies or is removed from office, the vice president or whoever is next in line takes over. If it is within the first two years of the previous term, that counts as a whole term. If it is the second two years, it doesn't count towards any future terms.
This California!anon couldn't help adding her amazing state in.
I really do love my country. I don't know if I conveyed that well here, but I love my country with everything I am.
