Six Months Earlier...

Emily could already hear the yelling and crying as she walked up to her sister's front porch and rang the doorbell. She waited for an uncommonly long time before the door swung open, revealing her exhausted-looking brother-in-law.

“Oh,” Gilbert mumbled, rubbing his bleary, red eyes. “'S you. Where's your Russkie?”

“Ivan,” she stressed his name in annoyance, “is working.”

Gilbert made an unintelligible noise before muttering, “Come in.”

He moved aside and Emily entered the house just in time to witness her oldest nephew come tearing down the stairs and crash into his father.

“DADDY! DANNY PEED!” the five-year-old screeched, pointing at his sniffling brother standing at the top of the stairs. There was a wet stain on the front of the younger boy's pajamas and at his brother's proclamation, Daniel burst into loud tears. Almost immediately, a second set of higher-pitched wails followed and Gilbert swore under his breath. Emily almost felt bad for him.

Almost.

Her brother-in-law ran a hand through his white hair and then peeled his first-born son off of his leg.

“Adam, go take your aunt upstairs to see your mother. And you!” he pointed at Daniel. “Stay right there! I'm coming to clean you up.”

He jogged up the stairs and hoisted the child in his arms before carrying him off. Meanwhile, Adam had realized that his beloved aunt was visiting.

“Auntie Em!” he squealed before throwing himself in a hug at Emily. She squeezed back, lifted her nephew and spun him around like she usually greeted him. Dizziness and a nausea that had become very familiar lately hit her and she quickly set her nephew down mid-spin.

“Are you okay, Auntie?” Adam asked when he saw how pale her face had suddenly become. She grinned at him, though it was strained.

“I'm swell, kiddo!” she insisted, fighting down the sick feeling. In an attempt to distract Adam, she asked, “You wanna show me your new baby sister?”

Adam nodded and slipped his chubby hand into hers. The nausea passed, Emily followed her nephew up the stairs and to the nursery. Madeline was there, pacing back and froth with her four-day-old daughter in her arms, trying to sooth the crying newborn.

“Hey, Maddie,” Emily greeted cheerfully.

“Hi, Em,” her sister replied tiredly. Madeline's hair hung limply, her glasses were sliding down her nose, and there were dark bags under her eyes. She looked just as tired as her husband did, but there was a happy glow behind her exhaustion. “You can go ahead and sit down. This might take a while."

Emily took Madeline up on her offer and took the chair in the room across from the well-used rocking chair. Adam clambered up onto her lap after she had sat down and immediately started sucking his thumb. Her arms snaked around the child and Emily held her nephew close as her sister continued to rock the baby until the cries faded. Madeline sank tiredly into the rocking chair next to Emily when the newborn had quieted down.

“Don't suck your thumb,” she scolded Adam lightly before gently pulling his hand away from his mouth. Quite by accident, his elbow bumped against Emily's breasts and she yelped in pain. Both Madeline and Adam looked at her in surprise; Madeline's eyes immediately narrowed in suspicion while Adam only looked confused. Emily chuckled nervously, feeling her face turn red like it always did when she was trying to keep a secret but had accidentally let something slip.

“Adam, go play with your toys,” Madeline ordered. He pouted, but slid off of Emily's lap and trudged out of the room. Madeline turned back to her sister with a knowing gleam in her eyes. The flush in Emily's face deepened; she knew she was caught.

“How long have you known?” Madeline demanded as soon as the door shut behind her son.

“Known what?” Emily asked, feigning innocence (rather badly). Her sister shot her a look of disbelief and, after a few agonizing seconds of trying to make a decision on whether to tell her or not, the words burst out of Emily's mouth, “Since yesterday!”

Madeline squealed in excitement.

“Oh my goodness! Em!” she cried out before throwing her arms around her twin and hugging her tightly. “That's wonderful! Congratulations!”

“Thanks!” Emily laughed and returned her sister's hug.

“Does Ivan know yet?” Madeline asked as she drew back. Emily shook her head.

“He's still at his conference and I was waiting for him to come home. I was going to tell him first but you figured it out before I had the chance!” she added, shooting a mildly accusatory look at her sister, who merely smiled again.

“It wasn't very hard, you're terrible at keeping secrets,” Madeline said. Emily pouted and would have argued that she was great at keeping secrets but all of the noise the two had made had woken up the baby and set her crying again. Sighing, Madeline reached into the bassinet and lifted her swaddled daughter out before bringing her to rest comfortably in her arms. Once in her mother's warm, loving hold, the baby quieted down. A lump grew in Emily's throat when she thought about how in a few months, she would be holding her own baby in her arms. A little boy or a little girl, but hers and her wonderful husband’s precious child. She couldn’t imagine her pregnancy going any way but perfectly.

I hope OP doesn’t mind the PrussiaxCanada pairing. It won't be in the story very much and it’s actually very important to the plot later on that Canada’s husband is Prussia, I promise. Thank you to everyone who commented. :)

I've been coming back literally everyday checking for an update, and then wala here it is. You are doing superb anon! I find the PrussiaxCanada pairing adorable and the realism of your chapters is just lovely!.

These are the type of stories I want to see more of on the site. Playing with the characterization of the countries but giving them their own lives per se. The importance of Prussia is intriguing... and being a Cold War maniac, I might know why. Love it! I can't wait for an update.

I'm so happy you updated, anon!!! I've been checking every day just like the OP :) I love the set up your doing, every thing seems so real and plausible. I can't wait for Russia to enter the story, as I'm dying to see his reaction. Please update soon, anon!
