New Bonds (2g/?)

Matthew was close enough to hear someone on the other side of the phone say “Gilbert?” For a moment he thought he recognized the voice, but he didn’t have much time to think about it, as the man (Gilbert, apparently) pulled the phone back to his ear and said, “Yeah buddy, sorry, just dealing with a prick here.” He gave Matthew an icy glare as he added, “Apparently SOME people don’t know how to be polite when someone’s on the phone!”

He was going to regret this later, he knew it. He shouldn’t have said anything. But he had started this, and he needed to finish it. Alfred always got on his case about giving up halfway. College was a fresh start: he needed to be firmer about what he wanted if he wanted to be taken seriously.

Courage at least partially renewed, Matthew looked Gilbert straight in the eyes as he said, “There’s nothing prickish about telling someone off for being a disturbance. If anything, you’re the one being-“

But his amazing declaration was cut off mid-sentence as Gilbert waved him off and said, “Whatever. I have more important stuff to do anyway.” To the person on the phone, he said, “Meet me by my car, I’ll be there soon,” before hanging up and putting his phone away. Then he turned his attention to Matthew, who visibly shrank from the attention.

Gilbert walked around Matthew once, hunched over a little to look even more closely at him while looking him over with a critical eye. Matthew didn’t know what this man was thinking, but he seemed like the kind of person who liked to cause trouble. For one dreadful moment Matthew wondered if he really did pick the wrong time to speak up for himself, and he was almost ready to shrink back, apologize, and give up. But before he could, Gilbert stopped and let out a laugh, which made Matthew jump in surprise. Gilbert caught that, and in an amused voice he said, “You’re a jumpy little guy, aren’t you? What’s your name?”

Matthew didn’t even have the presence of mind to lie. “M-Matthew. Matthew Williams.”

He gave Matthew a pat on his head as he stood up properly, and he said, “Well, ‘M-Matthew Williams,’ you got balls, I’ll give you that. Most people don’t have the guts to talk to the Awesome Me with a sassy tone. So I’ll tell you what: I’ll let you off easy this time, alright?”

Matthew didn’t know what was going on, so he did the only thing he could do: he nodded. Gilbert gave him a rather rough pat on the back as he said, “Well go ahead and enjoy your cell-phone-less library, ‘Matthew Willaims,’ “ as if it was his gift to Matthew or something. Then he finally left, and Matthew let out one long breath.

For a few seconds, all Matthew could do was stare at the door Gilbert had walked out of. He almost couldn’t believe it: he had finally stood up for himself, and it worked. Someone actually listened to him.

This was so awesome!

Excited, Matthew looked over to the tables, wondering if everyone else had seen how he had finally stood up to someone. But the ecstatic smile quickly left his face as he saw the other students. They didn’t look pleased, no, they looked fearful. Matthew knew that look all too well, he had seen it in high school so many times before. It was the look that onlookers gave the poor nerdy kid before he got shoved in a locker. It was the look that those in the know-how gave the unsuspecting before they got jumped after school. It was the universal look of pity: they knew something he didn’t know, and it was going to come back and bite him in the ass.

But not everyone in the vicinity had that look on their face, Matthew noticed. When he looked around, his gaze settled on the librarian. This man had, at some point during the conversation, lowered his book far enough to see what was going on. And he did not give Matthew a look of pity, oh no.

For the first time ever, Matthew saw an amused smile on William’s face.
