el quetzal vuela más alto - notes

el quetzal vuela más alto - This is Spanish for "The Quetzal flies higher." The Quetzal is our national bird ( AND NOT TO TOOT OUR OWN HORN, BUT ITS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL AS WELL ). This is in reference to our national anthem, Native bird that lives in your seal / protector that protects your soil / hopefully he will fly high / more than the condor and the royal eagle!

the war: The Guatemalan Civil war started in 1960 and only ended in 1996. It devastated the country and 200,000 people were killed. It was the longest and one of the bloodiest wars in Hispanic History and 93% of the war crimes were committed by the government. Because of this war, about one million Guatemalans fled the country. I was one of them.

poverty: Poverty is a crushing problem in my home country, more than 50% of the country is living below the international poverty line.

crime: there are about 40 murders a week in Guatemala City alone. The country is known for its broken down justice system, which is backed up with THOUSANDS of unsolved murders, most of which are women who were murdered in the chaos of the post-war world. Drug trafficking is another thing. It's hard as hell to get arrested in Guatemala, trust me and drug cartels from other parts of Latin America know this, therefore take advantage. If you walk down the streets, you can see lots of the store have Mexican sounding names. Chances are there is some sort of trafficking is going on there.

This may not be the best, but I think it summarizes my relationship with my country perfectly. I love my country, but I hate it too.

I guess it's true, all Latin people seem to be labeled "mexicans" and left with that.

Just as all Latins label "chinese" any person with asian-looking features, right?

I understand your feelings in this fill, anon. I am Latin too, living in Asia. One wonders why people put so much focus in the differences among nations, instead of looking for our common goals. Everyone says "we want peace and development and harmony", but when it comes to treat each other equally...*sigh*

I like your country a lot, by the way. Been so many times to Antigua, Esquintla, San Marcos, Guate city, et cetera. So you have my best wishes and a big hug.

Some of us just call Latin people Latinos/Latinas if we have to refer to ethnicity for some reason. Not all crackers white people think the same! Especially in Texas, which ... is kind of funny for a state that borders Mexico.

*hugs?*

This! I'm Latin American too from a forgotten country travelling abroad my friends or family are mad poeple doen't know our country and call them ignorants, well I'm sure if the meet someone from Madagascar, or Moldavia they wouldn't have a clue of where it is. Major fail in logic and empathy.

Btw, the fill is very well written OP and I like how Guatemala is portrayed helping her people.

I never thought someone would write about Guatemala (though I considered doing so myself) but as someone whose parents also fled during the war I'm glad to see someone did. Not only that but I enjoyed the fact that you portrayed both what makes it such an amazing country and what difficulties its people have to face; you didn't ignore one or gloss over the other.
