Huh, that's so strange that something like that could still be lurking about these days; some areas of America are more heavily German than people realize, but I guess people sometimes don't even notice unless you have an obvious German name or accent! But that's really awesome that fandom did that for you. :D

Equally dumbfounded here! At least it's only isolated incidents, though; I can only imagine being German (or mistaken as such) in the US or UK during the latter half of World War, or being Russian during the height of the Red Scare in the US. Hell, or being (apparently) an Arab Muslim in NYC immediately after 9/11. In situations like that, there are always horrible situations where fear turns to hatred and anger, and that's horrible enough, but it breaks when those prejudices manage to linger in even a few minds, a nation made up of immmigrants. That's some damn ironic xenophobia. OTL

Xenophobia always has been and always will be present in American culture. There is currently a rash of violence against taxi drivers in New York (The whole state, not just the city), and that includes Latino drivers as well as Middle Eastern ones.

Hell, if you want to talk about racism in general and not just xenophobia, anti-antisemitism is still alive and well on college campuses. I still haven't figured out how they managed to steal the mizuza from the Hillel lounge AND slash the door without getting caught by someone.
