“When it started, I thought he just wasn’t in the mood, but it just got worse… I mean, after that, I thought he was mad at me, but now I’m really thinking that something’s wrong,” said Canada.
“I do not mean to insult you,” said France leaning back on his sofa, “but, you have tried talking to him, yes? You and America aren’t exactly the most… vocal people.”
“I’ve tried asking him if he was mad at me, he said no, and then I tried asking later… he said he felt sick that day and that he didn’t want to talk about it,” said Canada. For some reason, France was the only one he felt comfortable telling this to. This was probably because Canada was sure that he had run into everything in his lifetime and yet was still young enough to retain some kind of sensitivity to it, unlike someone like say, China. “To be honest, for a while, I thought maybe he got kicked in the balls or something and was too embarrassed to tell me, but he could have told me and we would have had a good laugh on it. It’s been too long and he almost looks scared when I try to do anything romantic or sexy for him. It’s like we’re just roommates or something, and he’s deep in the closet.” France raised an eyebrow at Canada’s choice of metaphor. Canada insisted on looking at the books on the coffee table instead of to France’s face.
“Did this all start suddenly?” asked France, “Any other issues besides the lack of sex?”
Canada sucked in a breath, eyes still averted. It was a habit — when all eyes were on him, he couldn’t stand to look. “I honestly don’t think I really noticed it that much before, but… a bit before, he would still go out to the store to buy food, and go to work, but he’d stopped going anywhere just to enjoy.”
“It’s not about sex,” said France.
“So you can’t help me?” asked Canada.
“I never said that. I only said that this isn’t about sex. Well, it may be about the sex for you, but it isn’t for him.”
“Then what is it about?”
“I can’t say. Would you like me to talk with him?”
“He might get mad that I told you —”
“But you are worried about him. If I can talk to him and find out what’s wrong, we may be able to help him. Obviously, what you’re doing right now isn’t working.”
“Why would he talk to you if he wouldn’t talk to me?”
“Sometimes it’s easier to talk to people who aren’t so close.”
Canada buried his face in his hands. “Th-this is my fault, isn’t it, I did something, I —”
“This isn’t your fault, Matthieu.”
He peeked through his fingers. “It has to be.”
“I can’t think of anything you could do to cause this,” said France, “Though, you need to think on how important the sex is to the relationship, and what you’re going to do if he won’t put out.”
“Do you think something— something happen to him?” A million things flashed through Canada’s mind, none of them good.
“Don’t ask me things I obviously don’t know the answer to,” said France. “And I’m just going to talk with him, I’m not going to interrogate him.”
“Oh,” said Canada, “And… can you do me a favor?”
“Anything, dear.”
“Don’t tell him I told you anything,” said Canada, “He’s going to get mad, I know it.”
France sighed and scratched the stubble on his chin, and thought twice about getting involved. This relationship obviously needed a lot of work.
