He decided to keep both his mother and father's last name, while Matthew only has his dad's last name. I figured it was the best way to have him keep his own last name while still being brothers with Matthew.

That maiden name thing's kinda weird to see outside of Latin families and mothers who were keeping their maiden name anyways, hmm.
Like...keep it? Wouldn't that be a hassle to change since he obviously didn't decide to do that when he was born. Or was one of his parents remarried?
Mind if I ask who the older brother is? personally i prefer matthew myself because it plays in with the whole overshadowed slightly thing

Combination last names, like what America has, are actually pretty common in my area. More women are keeping their last name, so the kids usually end up with hyphenated names until they choose to go with one or the other. And there's another reason for it too, but I want to keep that a surprise for when it comes up in the fic.

And yeah, Canada's the older of the two. But everyone makes the mistake of calling America the older brother, based on their personality.
