Japan/fem!China - Letter from a Long-time Acquaintance [1/2]

(Anonymous) 2010-10-24 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
My Dearest Chun Yan,

You are the spring in my step, my eternal youth abound, my mountain rhododendron, my condensed soup in a can. I awake to the thought of you and remain occupied with thoughts of you. I mean it; I sleep with a map of China on the wall opposite my bed and it's the first thing I see every morning.

It has come to my attention that we would make the loveliest pair. Why not? I have known you almost all of my life; I have seen your seasons and moods come and go. I have woken with your face in my mind and your name on my lips. I have seen your shore approach from my little boat. I have held your hand on our walks by the lake.

Simply put, our time together (save for a few...complications) has been simply splendid over the centuries. It is only a matter of technicality to make us official.

Marry me. Under my guardianship, you need never fret your pretty head about such frivolous concerns such as national defense, civil unrest, or self-government, because I will take of everything. I guarantee you and Wan will prosper, given you follow my every word.

I will provide you with all the conveniences of modernity; we will view the countryside by train ride, spend our winters in a house with central heating, and send our children to the finest schools (Japanese schools, of course!). I will dress you in the most expensive dresses and hire you the most skilled hairdressers for our vacations to my home. We will spend the evenings gazing at the stars above the sea of lights at Yokohama and our mornings at the foot of Mount Fuji.

And there will be flowers, always flowers; chrysanthemums and peonies, cherry and plum blossoms, roses and irises.

Perhaps we shall tour Europe, but Europe will not come to your doorsteps uninvited. You will never hear from that gentleman Arthur Kirkland about favors you owe him for his damned opium. You will never be bothered by a certain northern neighbor by the name of Ivan Braginsky about living with him; I have insured he will be staying far away in the foreseeable future. Far, far away. And as long as I am watching, that eternal flirt Francis Bonnefoy will be forbidden to send you lewd glances or make those disgusting sleep noises of his. It is, after all, improper to make advances towards another man's wife. And Ludwig? Very soon, he will be leaving as well and you will belong to me and only me.

So, give me your love, and I will give you your half of the world, and more.

Say yes, and make me the happiest man in the world.

Say no? Well, that is not an option I am willing to consider.

Love,
Honda Kiku

P.S. - I regret that I could not deliver this message in person, but the sight of your face when we shall meet again and link our fingers (your hands have been made rough from years of toil, poor thing) will more than compensate for it.

Japan/fem!China - Letter from a Long-time Acquaintance [2/2]

My Dearest Kiku,

I may not possess even half of my former power. I've been humiliated, made to bow down and lick the floor for scraps of food. I've been cut apart and used. But if there is one thing I will never surrender, it is my national dignity.

Get your mind out of the trash heap; I will not become your colony, protectorate, or special extension of the Empire of Japan. I will not give up my language, my people, my status as a nation to scrub your floors and cook your meals.

It seems that whenever there is a group of voracious men and they see a fellow nation who happens to be a particularly desirable woman, they feel it is in her best interest to marry, or should I say, conquer her (and it seems if this nation is a lovely young man their behavior is no different) so they can have a little gaggle of colony children that they can happily say they fathered (and I must say, it is an awful metaphor for these endless concessions I am beholden to)

I have encountered more of these men in my lifetime than I would care to name, and I held my own against them every time. The only difference between them and yourself is that I have put your name on this letter.

You may stick your enchanted rod wherever you may please (and it seems that it pleases you immensely when your gentlemen friends stick theirs in you), but spare me the pretense that you're helping me by doing so.

I regretfully must decline your offer,
Wang Chun Yan

---

My Dearest Chun Yan,

You say no as if you had the finest military in the world to fight me. That you do not have.

Please, do not complicate the situation further. I feel it is in both of our best interests to avoid stirring up strong emotions and taking up arms. I too hold strong emotions, but I assure you I mean you no harm.

Please reconsider your current actions.

Love,
Honda Kiku

---

My Dearest Kiku,

You underestimate the drive of my people when confronted with a hostile outside force. I will not go to war with you, yet. We shall see how long this “peace” will last.

Love,
Wang Chun Yan

Ah. Brilliant. I love Kiku's first letter, the prose and flow of it is very authentic, his voice can be easily heard and very sympathetic. I also love Yan's letters, especially this line:

I have encountered more of these men in my lifetime than I would care to name, and I held my own against them every time. The only difference between them and yourself is that I have put your name on this letter.

...heartbreaking and true. Thanks for this, anon!
