I Think I Need A New Heart [27b/27]
(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 01:44 am (UTC)(link)Truth was he would have jumped at any opportunity to hang out with his brother. It wasn’t that he didn’t see Matthew (they still lived together) it was just that they hadn’t really hung out in a while.
He spent a lot of time at Arthur’s place and Arthur spent a lot of time at theirs. It wasn’t that Alfred wasn’t happy for them, because he totally was, it was just a little painful to see their awkward-yet-happy new relationship glow.
So when Matthew suggested that they have a bro night he had agreed even knowing it would mean dressing up a bit. He ended up wearing some of the clothes Gilbert had got him (nothing red) and had noticed a few appreciative glances cast his way so he guessed he looked pretty good in them. He wished Francis could see, as sick as that was.
Matthew was late which should have made Alfred suspicious but he didn’t think anything of it until he got a text. It was from Matthew. Sorry. Think of it as returning a favor. Carpe Diem
It took Alfred a minute to remember what the phrase meant and then another to remember that he had told Matthew the same thing when he ditched on the trip upstate. Something in his stomach twisted and he looked up.
Francis was at the front of the restaurant and Alfred understood what Matthew was apologizing for. He was dressed in Alfred’s favorite suit, a grey three piece, and Alfred wished that didn’t make him want so much.
“No touching,” he whispered to his hands which seemed likely to be treacherous.
Then he was there at the edge of the table, smiling and saying in his stupid sexy voice, “May I sit?”
Alfred didn’t say anything but he nodded because he couldn't do the cold shoulder thing, not really. He thought Francis looked relieved but maybe that was his imagination.
“Matthew’s not coming, is he?” Alfred said resignedly as the waitress handed over menus. They were in French. Matthew was a cruel bastard who didn’t deserve Alfred’s love.
“I’m afraid not,” Francis said lightly. “He was genuinely regretful at having to deceive you. If it helps he believes it is for your own good.”He looked at Alfred over the menu, eyes unreadable. “It would be hypocritical of you, I believe, to object to his methods.”
Alfred made a face. “That was totally different.”
“Oh?” Francis said with the arch of the brow.
“Yeah!” Alfred said heatedly. “It was different with Arthur and Matthew. They both wanted…” he paused then pushed forward, “they both wanted each other.”
Francis put down his menu and said slowly, “I think, no, I know there has been a misunderstanding. I am so very sorry if I ever made you feel…unwanted. You are not unwanted, not in the slightest.”
Alfred gaped at him and Francis’ gaze didn’t waver. They might have stayed like that forever if the waitress hadn’t come by, nervously asking if they were ready to order.
“Yes, please,” Francis said, still looking at Alfred. “I’ll have the Blanquette de Veau. Would you like me to order for you, Alfred?”
“Ah, no,” he glanced at the menu, smiling weakly. “Um, could I have the Coq au Vin with the Salade Niçoise please?” His pronunciation was flawless.
Francis looked impressed so Alfred muttered, “Roderich. I could probably order in like ten different languages.”
I Think I Need A New Heart [27c/27]
(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 01:48 am (UTC)(link)His face was open, his voice sincere. “This isn’t…” Alfred choked out.
Francis drew back, stung. “Well,” he said smiling tightly, “you did tell me before. It was my fault for not listening.”
“This isn’t me!” Alfred blurted out.
Francis blinked once or twice. “I’m afraid I don’t understand. Have you been replaced by a body double?”
Alfred scrunched his face in impatience. “No, I mean the clothes, the ordering in French, that sort of fancy stuff. I mean I don’t mind and it’s kind of fun but it isn’t me and you like that stuff.”
Francis laughed with relief. “Is that all? Alfred, of course it’s you. But so are the atrocious t-shirts you’ve had since high school and your fondness for McDonalds which I in no way share or understand. I don’t want you to be like me. I want you, everything that is.”
He leaned forward, unusual uncertainty in his expression. “Look, I know I am callous and difficult and I drink too much wine. I know I’ve been horrible to you and I’m likely to be horrible to you in the future because it’s who I am but I do care and I am willing to try and be better. For you, I think I could be better. It won’t be easy but I think it will be worth it.”
Alfred gaped at Francis who was actually afraid Alfred would reject him. He looked at Francis who would be just as difficult as he promised. Then again, Alfred had always liked a challenge, it was one of the reasons he loved Francis so much in the first place.
Alfred took a deep breath and steeled himself. He wanted to offer Francis the world but it was too soon for that, so he offered his hand instead.
“Alright,” he said. And just like that, one word and there was a lightness in his chest. He felt a little drunk on happiness. Was that possible? He made a note to look into it.
Francis looked at him as though he couldn’t believe Alfred was actually saying yes. Then a slow smile spread across his face and he put his palm against Alfred’s and let their fingers intertwine.
He took a deep, shuddering exhale. “That is just…this is very nice.”
Alfred’s smile crinkled at the corner of his eyes. “Yeah it is.”
Then he tugged Francis across the table and gave him the world’s most enthusiastic kiss right there in front of everyone in the restaurant.
Because really why seize the day when he could seize Francis instead?
I Think I Need A New Heart [27d/27] THE END
(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 01:56 am (UTC)(link)They weren’t a family and though this was a mere technicality at this point, Francis objected strongly to the title.
“I refuse to be in any way related to that,” Francis had said disgustedly.
Alfred had laughed, seeing the fondness tucked behind the insult. He was getting better at seeing those sorts of things on Francis’ face. It was like learning a new language where an eyebrow tilt could mean anything from ’you are in such deep shit and will be lucky if I talk to you for the next three days’ to ’pick the surface you want me to ravish you on’.
Matthew, after catching Francis ravishing Alfred on the kitchen counter for the third time after such an eyebrow tilt (Alfred perhaps took his love of food to unhealthy levels), screamed “People eat there!” and called Arthur.
Arthur calmly suggested that Matthew move in with him so he could try and maintain some sense of sanity.
Matthew panicked and flailed a lot. After a few days of this, Alfred made an executive decision and packed up all of his brother’s stuff, depositing it on Arthur’s doorstep. Matthew followed a few hours later and, in the middle of putting his books on Arthur’s bookshelf, he found it difficult to remember why he had freaked in the first place.
Hearing that Alfred was now living alone, Gilbert invited him to move in. He did this partly out of genuine kindness, partly out of the desire to have someone to prank, and partly because he knew Francis would eventually get his shit together and Alfred would move out.
Alfred was perfectly okay with Francis wanting to take it slow and made it clear that they could live separately forever as long as he could spend the night now and then. (He spent most nights and sometimes, though Francis would later deny this, they just cuddled).
Francis spent less time at the studio then he ever had before, going to movies with Alfred after work and actually sleeping in his apartment for once (Matthew had insisted on getting rid of the red sofa and no one had argued).
But if Francis happened to be at the studio then it was a sure bet that either Alfred or Matthew had made their way over there to see their respective boyfriends. Eventually Francis knew he was going to have to do an exhibition on the two of them (discarding any pictures that featured even a sliver of Englishman) just to justify all the photographs he was taking. Happiness suited Matthew and it made Alfred shine.
They all still went to dinner a few times a week which was so achingly normal that Arthur and Francis didn’t have the heart to point out that they were technically double dates.
Arthur and Francis still bitched at each other, occasionally straying in violence, Alfred still talked too much and too loudly, Matthew still was passive aggressive, and they still caused havoc wherever they went.
Only sometimes Francis would loop his ankle around Alfred’s and sometimes Arthur would stop whatever he was doing and just look over at Matthew and smile. Sometimes it was so very different from before that it very suspiciously resembled a happy ending or, at the very least, a happy beginning.
The End
Thank you to everyone who has joined me on this mad journey to the finish line. To my lurkers (if I have any) thank you for even taking the time to read this and to my commenters I would give you all the nice things in the world if I had the power to do so. Your comments inspired me and made me smile and made all the late nights typing this between homework assignments more than worth it. You are wonderful people.
Re: I Think I Need A New Heart [27d/27] THE END
(Anonymous) 2012-06-29 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)I also like the fact Francis and Alfred are taking it slow. A bit different to the normal perception of Francis liking it fast?
A very sweet story, I'm sure I'll re-read it again.

Re: I Think I Need A New Heart [27d/27] THE END
(Anonymous) 2012-08-31 05:54 am (UTC)(link)Beautiful ending Anon, beautiful. I'm glad that Matthew got to spring some Carpe Diam on Alfred and that Francis got down off his high horse and was honest.
The counter ravishing part was quite lovely as well.
Thank you for this wonderful story, it was funny, dramatic, and full of great characterization. I really enjoyed it.
