I Think I Need A New Heart [26d/27]

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Francis had forgotten that ordinary people were not home so late in the day. He arrived at Alfred and Matthew’s apartment to find that neither of them were at home, Matthew at the coffee shop and Alfred at school.

He debated sitting in the hall until one of them returned but the carpet did not look particularly clean and besides, he had no way of knowing when they would be home.

He chose instead to go get the spare key from Feliciano. It meant at least half-an-hour’s worth of conversation and several cookies but it was worth it to be able to sit on a couch instead of the hallway.

He turned on the television, flipped through the channels, and eventually settled on a soap opera. He fell asleep within ten minutes.

This was how Alfred found him, arriving home several hours later.

It was not the first time Alfred had some across a sleeping Francis. Several times Francis had slept over in their dorm room and once or twice he had slept on the apartment’s couch when he didn’t want to go home for some reason or other. Alfred had wondered what it would be like to see that sleeping face every morning. Francis looked beautiful as he slept; not sexy or attractive but beautiful.

Alfred stared for a beat or two before turning away into the kitchen. No doubt Francis had come to see Matthew, unaware that Matthew had picked up an extra shift.

So he made lunch, just enough for one person, and did his best to pretend that Francis wasn’t there. He had always had a great talent for denial and he almost managed to convince himself. That was until Francis woke up and ruined everything.

Francis had always been one of those people who awoke slowly, gradually adjusting to his surroundings. He took the opportunity to watch Alfred in the kitchen. He was making some sort of pasta dish and Francis sleepily noted that he wasn’t reading a recipe or a pasta box. Maybe they could cook together sometime.

It was a surprisingly nice thought and Francis discovered he had no regrets for thinking it. Perhaps it was the lingering effects of his nap or perhaps it was having finally admitted that he actually liked Alfred, but it was easier than before to think such things. He felt no urge to hastily bury the thought.

He rose and padded into the kitchen. He leaned over Alfred shoulder to peer into the pot. “Smells delicious,” he said honestly.

Alfred jumped about a foot in the air and it was only through quickly moving that Francis avoided having his nose broken.

I Think I Need A New Heart [26e/27]

“I am sorry,” he said, laughing. “I did not mean to startle you.”

Alfred, recovering from his surprise, was not inclined to join in the laughter. “Why are you here?” he asked, turning back to his meal.

“I thought we might talk,” Francis said, leaning against the refrigerator.

“We already talked,” Alfred told him wearily. “Somehow I don’t want to go over all that again.”

“You wanted to talk last night,” Francis teased.

Alfred flushed. “Yeah, I’m sorry about that.”

“Don’t be,” said Francis, suddenly serious. “Don’t be in the least bit sorry. Those calls changed my mind.”

“Changed your mind?” Alfred asked tightly.

Francis beamed. “I’ve decided to give this a relationship a chance. It may not be quite what either of us expected but I am willing to make sacrifices. I have discovered I rather like you Alfred F. Jones.”

Alfred stared, looking somewhat like a startled deer. For some reason Francis found the expression irresistibly adorable and moved in to kiss the slightly gaping mouth.

Alfred stopped him firmly, expression hardening. “Not happening.”

Francis recoiled. “Excuse me?”

“I said not happening!” Alfred said furiously. “You’ve got to be shitting me! You insulted me and yet you’re the one whose willing to give this relationship a chance. As though I’d be so desperate that I’d just swallow all your insults and fall at your feet anyways.”

“But you said…” Francis stumbled over his words.

“Yeah, I did,” Alfred snapped. “I said a lot of things. I meant them too. And you know what? I got rejected loud and clear. You can’t just decide to want me all of the sudden like none of that happened. I’d rather my heart not be played with. Get out, Francis. Just go.”

“But…”

“Go.”

Francis didn’t know what to do. He had no ground here; there was no traction in the unyielding lines of Alfred’s face. He was beautiful in his fury but not quite himself. Francis hated that he had robbed the joy from that face and it was him who had done so, there was little point in pretending he didn’t know that.

Yet, how could he go? If he left now, he had an awful suspicion that this would be it. This would be the end. He reached for Alfred’s shoulder, words crowding his tongue.

They were stopped by the look in Alfred’s eyes. They had softened but not to reveal tenderness. They were full of pain.

Francis turned and left without another word.

Muhaha, I bet some of you thought this chapter would end slightly differently.

Also to Reviewer!anon I love Avatar with a burning passion and the fact that you referenced it was enough to make me die of happiness. That the reference was a Zuko related one pretty much made my life. Thank you :D

Definitely not what I expected, but Alfred's reaction completely makes sense to me. Man, Francis is going to have to step it up! This was a wonderful chapter, anon, and I really liked reading it! And I'm excited for the next part!

tsk, tsk...Francis, Alfred is a warm, caring, intelligent and incredibly man, and he knows this. He might also be a bit of a dork and a nerd and rather naive, but he's a good man. I'm glad he knows what's due him. People have feelings!

Authoranon, I'm glad you wrote the scene that way, even though I am in absolute agony right now. At least he didn't act all desperate.

I want to lick up your spine… you could photograph me naked…oh you treat me badly but I love you madly…I want to go to the park and hold hands…I want…I want… Francis…I love you…

I know you don’t feel the same

I loved the bits of the phone call. Wow, that's just...OMG.

Le gasp! Nooo! "Every heart is a tangle of knots that someone else tied". Only in this case, Francis tied these knots himself. While I hoped that Francis realizing his feelings would help, I am glad that Alfred didn't immediately forgive him. If he did then their relationship would never be on equal ground. Alfred has suffered for his feelings, now Francis needs to as well if he wants to earn Alfred's affections back after rejecting them I'm still hoping for them to get together, though.
I think hooking up with Matthew has made Arthur less abrasive, at least where Alfred is concerned.
I'm glad I could bring a smile to your face! You're welcome.
I can't wait to see how this is going to turn out. I hope you can update soon!
