Re: Take Your Democracy And Shove It (Part 1/2)

“Can't you stop it?” he pleaded. “Please...don't let this happen. You have to do something.”

“I...can't...” England's voice cracked a little.

Scotland leaned over the table and grasped the blond's thin fingers in his own work-roughened hand. “Last time they took control...it damn near killed me. Brother, please...you can't let them...I can't accept this...”

England's green eyes met Scotland's accusing, pleading stare then and he shook his head, disentangling the younger man's grip. He swallowed hard as he stood up and walked towards the door, his posture a little too straight, his face a little too impassive to be believable. Opening the door, he gestured for his brother to leave.

“You answer to Westminster, Scotland,” he said but his voice shook and his eyes fell to the floor even as he spoke. “You don't have a choice. Neither of us do.”

Scotland gave his brother one last scathing look, one last disbelieving stare before he let the paperweight fall from his hand and clatter to the floor. Without another word, he stormed past his brother, casually spitting on the floor as he left.

“One last thing, brother,” he said as he paused at the threshold of England's house. “I will never forgive you for this.”

And as he slammed the door behind him, he swore under his breath, blinded by tears and pretending that he didn't hear the sudden staccato of quiet sobs from inside his brother's house.

AN: Obviously this is hugely politically charged and turned out more of a rant than a fill. I won't apologise for that.

Some background for non-UK anons: Today David Cameron became the UK's Prime Minister, putting the UK under right-wing Conservative rule. Scotland overwhelmingly voted against him and his party (which have a history of oppressing Scotland) but, despite this, is being forced into accepting their rule. Today is a very bleak day for Scotland.

Translations: “Tha thu 'nad fhaighean!”

Also, the "bitch" that Scotland is referring to is Margaret Thatcher, who is universally hated there for her various crimes against the Scottish people.

Also, captch = in objectors. Damn straight.

Oi, I'm not terribly familiar with UK politics, but the emotions are coming through strong in this fic. Now I'm curious. What did MT do to the Scottish back in the day?

You have a right-wing conservative government there now? Is that as scary as a right-wing conservative government here in the States? Because that can be pretty darn scary.

I don't really want to use the kinkmeme as a soapbox for political debate, but to answer your question in a nutshell...

She used Scotland as a guinea pig for unpopular laws and taxes, such as the Poll Tax, which was introduced in Scotland for a year as a test run. When it was introduced in England, the English revolted against it and it was scrapped but Scotland was forced to pay it for a whole year before this happened.

She opposed trade unions, took away the rights of the Scottish working class and ran Scotland's main industries (mining, shipbuilding and steelworks) into the ground. She cut spending to the public sector, forced hundreds of thousands of Scots out of jobs.

She also took away the free milk in schools (which sounds like a really small thing, but the milk was introduced to prevent rickets and calcium deficiency in kids from poorer families, which was a HUGE problem back in the day).

She dragged the country into a war that the Scots didn't want. She tested dangerous weapons off the cost of Scotland. She continually denied Scotland the right to any kind of autonomy or self-governing, refusing to even compromise and give it a devolved parliament for its own local affairs. She acted in the interests of England alone, despite the fact that she was supposed to be governing *Britain*.

She basically widened the divide between the rich and the poor, brought a culture of greed, privatisation and brutal capitalism on the United Kingdom and Scotland, a country mostly relying on working trades and industry rather than corporate business, was the nation which suffered most as a result, and continues to suffer now.

And yeah, a right wing conservative government is pretty fucking scary. After Thatcher's disasters, conservatism collapsed in the UK and it's been on the left ever since.

But I guess voters have a short memory because it's not any more.

OH HAI SCOTTLAND. <3

Your translation appears to be missing.

I am willing to bet you that this comes up in social tomorrow. Just watch. And because of this, I'll actually know what the teach is talking about.

I actually rather liked the ranting feel. Because upon reading your notes, if I was Scottland (which I am obviously NOT) I'd be pissed as all hell too. What is with world politics lately...

Apologies...

“Tha thu 'nad fhaighean!” means basically something equivalent to "You're a cunt!" in Scottish Gaelic.

And I'm glad you didn't mind the barely concealed ranting. >.

... I need to learn to pronounce that. Right now.

Due to your barely concealed ranting which I thouroughly enjoyed, I have learned something about politics and history. (Ho shit, I can't spell today. >.<)

It's pretty hard to type it phonetically, but it's *roughly* "hah hoo na fah-gheen", where the "gh" sound is sort of a g but a little bit like an h kind of...rolled in the back of your throat. Like the "ch" in German words like "ich" but less harsh, I guess. And it's all rolled together in a sing-song kind of way. If that made any sense at all...?

Danke schön~

(Anonymous) 2010-05-13 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, that made sense, more or less. And I actually speak some German, so that comparison was increadibly helpful. I'm sure I'm mangling it horribly, but I doubt anyone I might say it to would know what it's supposed to sound like.

DAMN STRAIGHT.

English-Anon agrees completely.
my friend from Scotland and i are furious, but at the moment the is nothing we can do, unless the conservative/liberal coalition falls to pieces.
...or we rebel.

*hugs* English-anon, my heart goes out for your country too. These are bad times for all of us. :-(

OP

(Anonymous) 2010-05-13 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know much of this situation, but I thought the relationship between England and Scotland felt likely.

HAH! You're WRONG about Scotland!

(Anonymous) 2010-05-14 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
HAH!! I love it well people go on and on and ON about how badly Scotland and Northern Ireland are treated in a democracy, because seriously they should shut the fuck up before they know about all of the facts!

In TRUTH England gives them DOUBLE the amount per person than they give the people of England so before any Scottish people go whinging about it being unfair they should actually think about this!

PLUS, Maggie Thatcher was GREAT for this country/union (UK) because, yes, she was harsh to the lower classes but she dragged Britain kicking and screaming into the 21st century after the last 'Great cockup' left by Labour.

And another thing, just because Scotland /happens/ to be mostly Labour with some Lib-Dem DOESN'T mean that they should get some kind of special treatment! The fact is that they DO answer to Westminster! That's like saying "well, actually inner London is not going to be part of the Torries government this term because they voted Labour..." It's ridiculous! I mean they don't bloody well complain when they are receiving money and other benefits from England, but when something like this happens its all 'Oh noes! England is Bullying usDX'

BUT, other than that it was actually a very good fic, I especially love the England and Scotland chemistry, gave the fill some flavour well done C:

Was that necessary?

(Anonymous) 2010-05-14 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. This is the start of massive wank. I assume you're British, so you and someone from Scotland will have very differing views of what-all Margaret Thatcher did while Prime Minister.

I'm not taking anyone's side or passing judgment on Thatcher. I'm American, I know next to nothing about internal UK politics, and I won't pretend to. I'm just saying don't start battles no one can win, okay?

I...um...I think I'm just going to decline to respond to that, other than to say that I'm sure you'd probably hold a slightly different viewpoint if you and your loved ones were members of those "lower classes" that you talk about with such contempt. We're not subhuman. If you cut us, we bleed the same as anyone else.

But clearly we are not going to see things from the same point of view and I really don't want to waste comment space here on an argument that won't have any positive outcomes.

I'm glad you enjoyed the story.
