At Word's End -- Part 5a

(Anonymous) 2010-04-11 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Author's Note: A fairly short (for me at any rate) part. This was originally part of what was supposed to be a longer part 5 but it was getting too long and I decided it worked well enough on its own to post it separately. The rest of what is now Part 6 is mostly completed but will probably not be posted until the end of the month. I'll also be adding one more Kingdom Guide.

* * *

It was the near-dark of twilight the second time Alfred scurried down the tree that day. He had decided after much deliberation to go with the escape route that had worked for him the first time. He knew it and knew what lay ahead for him on it once he was free of the castle. He would follow a direct route down towards the Spanish border and then on to it's coastline, from there he would be on the first ship heading across the Waterways to the Southland continent. He knew that the Spanish King would happily tie up his father and the Northern King long enough for him to get away even without speaking to him about it first. He would send his thanks when he felt he was safe enough to do so.

Matthew and his party had left almost two hours earlier and dinner was still a half hour away so it was the perfect time to make his escape when everyone was busy getting ready for the semi-formal dinner. His stomach rumbled in annoyance at the thought of food, he hadn't eaten since a very brief breakfast on the road earlier that morning, it would probably be several more hours before he could stop long enough to eat the remaining pieces of fruit in his bag. He just didn't want to chance sneaking into the kitchen for a meal...there just wasn't enough time.

He hit the ground and straightened his pack taking a step in the direction of the wall when the soft sound of a voice clearing behind him drew him out of his determined fog. He whirled in shock which quickly turned to fear as he caught sight of the voice's owner.

The Northern King was leaning up against once of the pillars his arms crossed. In the flickering light of the garden lamps Alfred could make out the raised eyebrow and slightly amused twist to the King's lips. He was already dressed in his evening clothes which were as simple and stylish as his day clothes had been.

The King straightened himself graceful and crossed the short distance to where Alfred remained rooted in place. He flinched slightly when a hand reached up towards his cheek and let out a tight breath as it merely straightened the glasses that were sitting tilted against his face and then dropped to rest heavily onto his shoulder. There was no mistaking the King's feelings from the way the hand tightened almost painfully. But when he spoke his voice held the same amused lilt as his face held moments earlier.

"I am disappointed..." he said softly.

"I..." Alfred stumbled trying to quickly come up with a logical reason for him to be climbing down trees when he should be getting ready for dinner.

"Not only are you trying to run from me when I told you not to..." the King drawled the grip tightening once again and then it slipped up over and around Alfred's back to slide down and nestled at his waist, drawing him close enough to the King to catch the brief hint of cologne. "But then you chose to do so in such an obvious manner..."
Alfred's eyes narrowed at the challenge in the Northern King's voice. He didn't bother to argue when the King began to propel him back towards the tree. Though he did shake free of the lingering touch when they reached it and grabbed one of the branches, pausing only then to glance back at the King.

"Best go and finish getting changed for dinner," the King said mildly.

"Don't have anything else to change into," Alfred answered back defensively. The clothes he was wearing was only one of three outfits he had room for in his pack and was the nicest one he owned. He'd scrounged and in some cases worked hard to obtain them and had always been rather proud of them being among the first things he'd procured for himself all on his own.

At Word's End -- Part 5b

"We'll have to change that," the King murmured thoughtfully but his voice didn't sound as condescending as Alfred thought his father's might over the same subject. "During dinner we'll discuss what will happen tomorrow and if you'll give me a chance...we can discuss what will happen once we return to my homeland."

"Discussion," Alfred scoffed. He knew how these sorts of things went and how very little discussion there would be about any of it. "That's doubtful." He flinched slightly as the King stepped closer to him, expecting some retaliation for the backtalk.

"I do not wish to fight you, little Prince," the Northern King murmured leaning towards Alfred though he did not touch him. "Nor do I wish to make this any harder on you then it already seems to be. If you would just..."

"Be good and do everything you tell me too?" Alfred snapped in irritation feeling skittish under the King's looming presence.

"Nyet," the King said, his hand reaching up and brushing his finger's against Alfred's cheek. "If you would just be willing to work with me instead of against me..." he finished quietly. "...we might make this into something that will benefit us both..."

Alfred jerked back from him in surprise and the soft truth in the King's voice. He shifted nervously away until he tripped over a tree root. He gripped the tree trunk for support as the King stepped away from him giving him more space to breath as if he were a skittish colt. Alfred took a deep breath and without another word hurried back up the tree. He was already planning on waiting a few minutes and try again.

"I shall see you at dinner then," the King called up. "Since I am already ready I shall stay here until it is called. After that I shall be putting one of my men out here for the rest of the night."

Alfred's shoulders sagged at the last pointed remark. He was irritated for the length of time it took him to enter his room and toss himself down on his bed. The second after that his brain was already off and running on Plan B.

The last sentence had me chuckling out loud. "The second after that his brain was already off and running on Plan B." (chuckles again and shakes her head) Oh Alfred...

I was delighted to see that this was up - I was just looking around yesterday and wondering if the next bit would be up soon, because it had been awhile since the last update. And then I check the fill index again today, not even thinking about this fic and, lo and behold, an update! (hugs author!anon) I truly love how you're playing Ivan in this fic. He still seems very much like Russia, but with different aspects of him emphasized. The other aspects are still there, the danger, the power, but there's more. Like we're getting a more in-depth look at his personality. (waves hand in frustration) I just know there's a better way to say all of this, but my brain is currently in exam-week melt-down, and has shut off access to the areas that contain this better way of saying it. Suffice to say, I love this fic, I love you for writing it, and I will happily stand first watch on Alfred's room tonight. ;)

Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying it enough to keep an eye out for it... ;-)

But yeah updates will probably be kept to about one a month at least until I get caught up with some of my other WIPs I have going (and baring any more cropping up) it will help keep myself interested with out burning out on it since it's going to be a very long fic.

It's funny you say that about Russia because honestly I don't feel like I'm ever really writing him it's more like he writes himself. It's rather scary sometimes how often that happens with the character for me and not at all what I expected when I started writing him. True my Russia is never quite as dark and sadistic as a lot of the fandom seems to like to see him as but I like to think and hope that I do capture that dangerous hair-trigger undercurrent to him. He's not dark and sadistic...but he HAS been and he COULD be again given the right circumstances. And in this universe there's the trying to get the right blend between the man that has the reputation that stretches across the whole of the known world and the man who interacts with his family and those who he considers his extended family (who we will start to meet shortly) in quiet and normal manner. Both of those men are real and the same at the end of the day.

Still I thought he'd be a lot colder and darker towards America at this point but apparently he has other plans which I think make sense...or at least I hope it does. I blame him if it doesn't... *snerks*

My dear author!anon, this is one of the best AUs I've found in the Hetalia fanverse, it has everything I could ever wish for in a fic, and you're specifically going to lengths to ensure it will eventually be finished. The remarkable thing would be if I didn't keep an eye out for it! ;)

Yes! That darkness you mentioned you're trying to portray - it's coming across beautifully! It's part of what makes him so intriguing! And everything you say is there, and I'd totally spazz about it all some more, but my brain is melting out of my ears and taking my normal verbosity with it. (stupid finals...) Russia's plans work just fine, btw. I loved the bit where he was asking Alfred to work with him to make this something that was mutually beneficial so much...! Yes. Again, worship, devotion, and praise for you, most excellent author!anon! Worship, devotion, and praise! (looks over what she's just written) Yeesh, I sound like a creepy stalker-person. That's it, I need more sleep... See you at the next update! ^^ (stumbles off to get some sleep)

JUST FOUND CONTINUATION!!!!!!! %D
