I'm glad you mentioned the idea of primal forces (and indeed, Austria's fairly successful repression of them), since that wound up being what majorly motivated this piece-- on one hand, there's building an empire through war and conquest....and then there's building one through marriage (read: sex). Which is actually kind of skeevy in its own right. I just wanted to make the Habsburg marriages seem as creepy as humanly possible (in 1000 words or less), hahaha. And as for Spain, I'd think there would be this weird element of control to the way he views things. Like he can see the raw beauty in something, and the only way to make it really, truly beautiful would be to civilize it. And the only way to do that would be to remake it completely. And to do that, he'd have to destroy everything it'd become. You know? Ah, man, I really wanted to work with this mindset more, and especially how it shapes his dealings with Austria, but I didn't have enough free time for a very long piece. Couldn't develop it as slowly as I wanted, so I had to get the very essential points in, in as little text as possible. Damn you, exams!
