“See what?”

Kiku takes a step forward, stares, shakes his head. “It’s…it’s gone now,” he murmurs. He turns to Ariel. “Why can’t Arthur see it?”

“I’m not sure,” Ariel answers. “I don’t know if Arthur holds the same power over dreams that you do.”

“But that’s absurd. He got that scabbard in a dream.”

“You know, it’s quite irritating when you guys talk as if I’m not here –”

Arthur’s interrupted by a shrill, piercing scream; it makes him bristle, makes his muscles tense. He is three steps behind Kiku as they run in the direction, feet pounding on the dirt of the path.

That voice sounded female. Dear God, don’t let this be another Heracles -

And then they see the woman in the path, struggling against something Arthur can’t see. She turns her eyes to them, and for a moment her brown eyes meet Arthur’s own.

In some trick of the light, Arthur thinks he sees something that is not fear; a knowing glint, a simple smirk.

Help me! Please, help –” She’s cut off, her mouth gaping as she begins to choke.

“Kiku!”

“Right!” Kiku loads his arrow, pulls the string – and pauses. He frowns, his eyes darting about.

“Kiku, what are you waiting for?!”

“I can’t – I can’t see it!”

Arthur glances between the two; the woman’s eyes are beginning to roll into her head, her fists starting to unclench. They don’t have much time.

“Try, Kiku! Just try to –”

“There!”

Kiku lets go of the arrow; it flies, and apparently hits its target. It hovers in the air a moment before falling to the ground.

The woman’s skirt billows out around her as she collapses, pressing a hand to her neck and taking deep, gasping breaths. Arthur runs to her, kneels and puts a hand on her shoulder. “Are you all right, Milady?”

“Y…yes, I…I think I’ll be all right.”

She looks into his eyes, and Arthur thinks he sees that same spark, that knowledge, something she’s hiding from him. But she looks away and over his shoulder to Kiku. “I thank you, sir, for saving me.”

“It was nothing.” Kiku waves a hand and slings his bow back over his shoulder. “I was lucky, is all.”

“Not true,” she says, and smiles at him. “Your aim was perfect.”

“Kaho? Kaho!” A voice comes from farther up the path, and the three of them turn their heads. Arthur feels a breeze and knows Ariel has transformed so that he won’t be seen.

A man runs towards them, his cape flaring out behind him. As he approaches, Arthur sees the glasses, the black hair, those kind and worried gray eyes. He frowns.

I know this person.

He hears something echo from the distant past and is struck dumb.

Stories can be very funny things, Arthur. We like to think that one ends where another begins – a linear, straight thing. But that’s almost never the case.

“Reed,” Arthur whispers.

The man approaching them is actually little more than a teenager bordering on manhood, but those eyes and that face are unmistakable. There is no doubt in Arthur’s mind that this is –

“My Lord!”

Arthur starts as the woman – Kaho – stands and runs to him. They catch and hold each other, their embraces tight and relieved. (Arthur feels something like sadness strike him, sweet and swift and painful.)

“You’re safe? They didn’t hurt you?” the man asks, holding Kaho back and looking her over.

“No, I’m fine, my lord. These two men helped me.” She gestures to Arthur and Kiku. “Without them, I might be dead now.”

“Is that so.” The man turns to them. Arthur blushes and looks away, and out of the corner of his eye he sees Kiku do the same.

“I – I really did just get lucky –”

“I didn’t do anything at all, I just –”

The man raises a hand; they both fall silent. “What are your names?” he asks.

“I am Honda Kiku.” Kiku bows at the waist, his arms at his side.

“And I’m Arthur Kirkland,” Arthur says, giving the man a much smaller bow.

The man smiles at them, and Arthur feels his breath catch in his throat. There’s no doubt in his mind that this man is –

“I thank you both for saving my fiancée. My name is Eriol Hiiragizawa, and I am the Lord of these lands.”
