Oh hey, I remember that episode of Intervention. It didn't really bring out the best of me as a viewer because I wanted to reach through the TV and slap that woman so badly.
...and I guess I should have clarified that I couldn't grasp inhalants because I think the users are morons and any facts about the addiction are lost on me because of my bias. Sorry about that. I'd blame it on needing sleep, but there's really no excuse for not saying something.
Anyway, back to the ideas. I think I could do something with prescription pills and Finland. The commentor!anon above you mentioned Sweden and benzos, but I can sorta see Finland ducking into the medicine cabinet for a quick pick-me-up because he sees how well the pills work for Sweden.
Hmm... Especially since Sweden's the kind of guy to lie to the doc about how bad his symptoms (to obtain more pills) are or to take less to cover for Finland.
Yeah, I don't have much love for Allison from Intervention either... mostly because she comes from an affluent, successful family and just decided to be a dipshit.
The kids up North are a different story though. :( They're so isolated and marginalized... They've got food to eat and roofs over their heads, but precious little else. They've got no voice, no aspirations, and (for most of them) no future.
I guess, besides this being a notably Canadian issue, it resonates with Matt being invisible and lonely and searching for oblivion.
:P If you have a hard time writing it, maybe I'll take a crack at it myself, in similar format.

Or we could go back to alcoholism...
