It's Canada

(Anonymous) 2009-03-05 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
Every time the infomercials played about the gorgeous sprawling landscapes, friendly people, and true north strong and free… the girl could not help but sigh. That was NOT Canada.

Every time the line at Tim Horton’s wrapped around the building so you had to stand outside in the frigid cold, but you did it anyway because darn it you were already queued up and waiting for 10 minutes already- THAT was Canada.

The girl struggled out the chain restaurant’s doors to go to her first class. A gasp of anger escaped when she noticed the snow was piled high around the lot completely blocking her in. She looked up and saw a car puttering past that flung even more slush at her feet. The familiar blond head, with its springy hair, bobbed in the driver’s seat.

Ooh!!’ She snarled mentally. ‘It’s Canada.

-

The girl grumbled at the price of gas as she filled up at the pump. She looked up to see the signboard but caught a sight of HIM again.

“Hey.” He gave a small wave.

The girl tried not to groan. “Canada.” She uttered, and he seemed pleasantly surprised before she continued. “Because of you I’m stuck here seeing the same old thing as last year this break.”

“Hey- I’m in the same boat as you, you know!”

“I guess.”

“Yes!” The tale blond cringed and then peeked one eye open. A small smile appeared on the nation’s face. “Besides, there’s plenty about me you still don’t know.”

“Ok.” She rolled her eyes. She’d already been to everywhere he could take her. “So show me.”

-

Niagara Falls rushed loud all around them as they rode on the Maid of the Mist at the bottom through the choppy water. The spray was a wonder as it hit their faces, and they both had a good laugh over the small size of the U.S. side of the Falls.

“Ooah!” A tourist pointed suddenly at the bespectacled nation. “America!”

“…It’s Canada.” He replied miserably.

The girl paused, and frowned. His sadness made her feel… protective. How could anyone not recognize him? He was.. well, she had known him her entire life, he was him.

-

“Wheeeeee!” Both screamed in happiness as the rollercoaster at Wonderland plummeted, or as they jumped on the glass floor at the CN Tower.

What was that feeling. Why did everything she had considered mundane and unimportant about her country suddenly become a pleasure instead of a pain?

Canada didn’t give her time to stop and think about it more, though, as he eagerly pulled her to remember the streets of Old Québec City.

-

“And do you remember- remember when Chrétien got pied, and how YTV never used to suck, eh?”

She snorted in her poutine in laughter, nodding heavily in agreement.

Canada’s grin softened more into a smile and he ate a forkful of his own junk food. “And remember the first time you voted…? I was right there in the other voting box beside you, you know.”

“You’re always there.” She agreed.

Canada’s smile slipped away, but he didn’t seem angry or resentful. If anything, those light eyes were encouraging. “So you remember when you wished you could change me?”

The girl stopped.

Change him? It was true, she had wanted that. But now she couldn’t even imagine ever wishing for such a thing. It was Canada who knew how to make her laugh. It was Canada who made her stand up and be proud. It was Canada who she woke up to see every day.

She looked at her nation in realization. The one who had changed was her.

“…You were right.” She finally grinned back. “There was a lot I still didn’t know.”

-

The girl very nearly danced over to sit down at the long familiar booth and drink her coffee. Her university friend across from her raised an eyebrow.

“You know, you’ve been in good spirits lately. You’ve even started coming back to Timmies.” Her friend smirked. “So who’s this guy you’re so in love with?”

A startled blush covered the girl’s cheeks at the question.

Oh…

So that’s what that feeling was.

The girl shrugged helplessly in reply. “It’s Canada.”

oh lol... well it is kind of true. Especially near the border and at a spot like the Falls where there are thousands of Japanese/German/etc tourists, Canadians are assumed American unless proven otherwise a lot of the time - Hence the sewing of a Canadian flag patch on your backpack when travelling to anywhere outside of North America.

btw I'm shocked so many people actually liked this... haha.. Canada shall be loved by all.
