When they were young he laughed at her. She was a wild and skinny looking thing and he was a warrior in the making. It did not take long before she fixed that; soon he respected her for her strength and she tolerated him.
As they grew, he delighted in tormenting her, or trying to, when that failed he turned to tormenting her neighbour. It delighted him when it worked, and he continued on for many years, no matter that she beat him for often than not.
When they became adults a tentative friendship developed between them. A respect for each other that was born out of their history together. It wasn’t just him and her though, there was the other now and he hated it.
As she grew closer to the other, he began to grow angry. What did this foppish noble posse that he didn’t? He began to torment the other more.
When she married the other he became angry. The other didn’t deserve her! He couldn’t give her what she needed. It was the first time he’d ever wanted to cry.
As the wars of the world tore her and the other apart, he regretted that anger and hatred when he saw her cry. He didn’t know why it hurt him so, but he wanted nothing more to tear down the wall and fix things.
When the wall came down and he saw them together again he finally realized it could never be. Perhaps she had loved him once, but never like he loved her. She belonged to the other now and he could finally accept that. But if the other made her cry again he would be there to be her shoulder to cry on. And he'd sock the other a good one for making her cry.
