I'm tempted to say that the difference now is more of the fills feel like someone typed the fill directly into the comment box and posted it, when it would have been better if they edited it.

Which characters do fills like this get written about? I recall only one recently that left me gringing with how bad it was, but other than that, I haven't noticed anything - but I don't read even half of the fills that get posted these days.

TBH, it's probably comments like this that make people so hesitant to fill.

I've honestly stopped filling things because I get this impression from the meme, nor do I request anymore because people are so critical of prompts nowadays. I mainly lurk and comment on fills/prompts I like. It's sad that the kink meme has fallen to this.

Agreed. I still fill, but I feel nervous about it sometimes. Not fun.

nastiness

so much more nastiness

like page sixteen had that fucking mess of a prompt and now shit's going down again on three and the mods froze something on page 27 about AmeChu

also a lot of critical people like okay that's cool and all but holy shit slow your rolls grandma i said 'Russia being paddled by Hungary' not a freaking essay about capital punishment in the Western world

i think that's the reason why imo feel the kink meme has gone gown a notch from last year

a lot more raunchy stuff in 2010-2012 imo

I'm trawling through older prompts now. Lot of good stuff in there...

The general mood has gone from friendly to just a lack of respect and good manners really

Like that one anon said, nastiness is just everywhere and I've stopped filling here. Sad because they're really cool prompts here.

What's the difference between a good fill and a great fill to you?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-01 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm curious. What makes you bookmark a fill?

Re: What's the difference between a good fill and a great fill to you?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-01 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Funnily enough, I haven't bookmarked a lot of great fills, because they're so widely recommended that I don't have to.

The fills I have bookmarked generally hit a spot, for whatever reason, when I read them. Good humour, a decent filthy piece of smut, something I don't see a lot of -- if it has that and I think I'll want to read it again, it gets bookmarked.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Oh snap.

What countries do you like/miss reading about?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-01 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I personally miss reading fills about Asia - especially Korea and China.

What about you, anons?

Same here. I don't know exactly what makes a fill so good but yes. It really hits that spot you didn't even know you had and I find myself devouring them in seconds.

I miss seeing the Asian fills, there aren't as many these days. I also miss seeing the Baltics and the Middle Easterners (though neither was ever really popular, but still).

As for the ones I do like reading about, the Nordics will always be my favorites to read about, but generally anything with a good plot interests me.

Filling for Homeland

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
So I was wondering if other people found themselves writing and/or prompting a lot about the country they're from? I tend to fill a lot for America, even though he's not my favorite character. I'm just curious if this holds true for other people.

Re: Filling for Homeland

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
I have never filled anything for my nation because I find him so boring as a character. I don't know if I could even do it well because I figure it's harder to resist letting your own headcanons and cultural knowledge overshadow canon characterization when it's your own country.

Re: Filling for Homeland

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't ever filled anything centered on America or Japan (the two places I call home), nor do I usually prompt for them. Most of the time, I find myself writing a Nordic or another country instead.

It's not that I don't like my countries personifications, it's more so I find others more interesting.

Woah. This is interesting.

I'm like OP. I'm Asian/North American(I'd rather not get more specific); I learnt a lot about Asian History in school back in Asia, and also learnt a lot of North American History in North America. Might as well use it.

I haven't filled anything for a year or two, but unlike the first anon, I liked filling for my country and the countries around them BECAUSE I knew of them so well, their histories and cultures. Their interactions came naturally to me.

Also, if it matters any, I didn't/don't have an otp or a favorite character in Hetalia. I tried to fill equally with every character, but unfortunately tended to focus on my home nations since I'm familiar with them. (Which is beating the point of "equal", but yeahhh. Familiar is good. Familiar= good characterization, right? Yeah, I hope so.)

I write and request a lot of British Isles family stuff. I request because I'm curious as to other Anons' takes on them, and I write because any excuse to inflict my headcanon on other people XD

I'm from Ireland myself but I don't tend to write Ireland as much as I write Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. When your home country is an OC it's really easy to Sueify him/her, especially if you're writing historical fic. I've only got comfortable writing stuff where Ireland is a main character in the last year or so.

The only time I do fills with America (my homeland) are when I find prompts that I love for other reasons that just happen to request America.

I much prefer to write the characters that I identify with more as a person - Canada and Sweden, in particular - but then, I write mostly AUs, so history's not as much of a factor.

And I'll try to write any character if I love the prompt enough. Maybe not well, but I will try. :)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here. Upon reading this, I feel like this is probably the main reason I've written a lot of America; it's not specifically that it's *America*, it's simply that I've liked the prompt and America happens to be the subject of it. Although there is some measure of 'I'm familiar with it' too.

Re: Filling for Homeland

I'm Canadian. For the last couple of years I've been filling for Nordics almost exclusively, but when I first found the kink meme I wrote a lot of Canada.

In the beginning, I really liked the character for my country, and I was enamoured with the fact that I could now write stories set in Canada (none of my previous fandoms have had Canadian characters or settings). It was really refreshing and fun. But then my interests (both character-wise and history-wise) shifted to northern Europe.

I wish there was more Eastern Europe. And Balkan...

I'm thinking that there isn't anything wrong with the fills, they are just not that many anymore. Because like 90% of the writers dropped off.
