I've been turning the world upside down in my search for this request and its' awesome fills, without much luck.

The prompt was something along the lines of "nations torturing someone using a torture technique used in their country". I remember fills involving Italy using Water torture, France with The boot, something with Germany, and a role-reversal of Spain getting waterboarded by his citizen.

I'm looking for this cute and funny this funny AU fic where Arthur is a writer with writer's block who breaks his window and has Alfred the repairman come fix his window. Arthur falls for Alfred and keeps breaking stuff to keep Alfred coming back so he can flirt with him! I *thought* I had the link to that fic bookmarked but apparently I don't:(. Is this the one? It doesn't explicitly ask for nations torturing their citizens, just nations with their devices, but I don't see anything that rules that out. :)

I'm new to kink memes, so I'd like to ask about the etiquette regarding this issue. I just read a really depressing (but really good) fill on the meme, and I feel like I need to write a happy ending to it in order to feel better. Would it be alright for me to post it without permission from the original requester and writer, especially since my happy ending would definitely go against what was requested?

You don't have permission, so don't do it. I'd be pissed if someone took it upon themself to do a sequel to one of my fills, wanting to "fix" the story, when it doesn't need fixing.

We already write fanfiction, can't see why it would be wrong to write fanfic based on someone elses fill too. But you should probably ask the writer if you want to avoid wank.

Ask the author!anon's permission, at the fill/discussion post/kink chat or all three. You could ask the OP's permission as well but that isn't such a big deal as the author's permission. If the author doesn't reply or says no, just write it and keep it to yourself. I wouldn't post it without the author giving the go ahead. It's their writing after all and then should be able to do what they like with it.

The problem is that you don't know how the author will react, they could be flattered or they could be annoyed that someone wanted to change their story. It's a subject that you have to tread carefully around.

I personally don't see anything wrong with it since we're already writing about someone else's characters and changing things without permission. However, changing the ending of someone else's fill could imply kink shaming. Without knowing the exact prompt, it's hard to say, but writing a story like that could make the requester feel that their request wasn't OK.

If your sequel changes the ending and goes against the prompt, I say don't. That's kind of pissing on both the author's story and the OP's prompt. Read a different story. There are plenty of happy ones on the kink meme. No need to go changing someone else's depressing story that, from what you're saying, was supposed to be depressing.

I don't think writing an AU of a fill changes the already written story...

In a sense, no. But in a different sense, yes. If someone wrote a 'sequel' to one of my fills that completely changed the ending of it, the original fill would still be intact, but I'd also be wondering what the hell was so damn wrong with my ending that they had to change it.

From what little information we've been provided, it reads as if someone is upset that the story didn't end the way they wanted it to and want to rewrite it to suit their personal taste, despite the original ending being what the request asked for. As an author, I find that both pointless and incredibly rude, therefore my opinion is that it shouldn't be done.

I'm not telling the thread OP that they absolutely can't, and I don't want to argue technicalities on the issue- my opinion is that if it were my story, I'd be offended (especially if it were done without my permission), and that it shouldn't be done. They asked for opinions, I gave mine. We can argue back and forth about whether or not the original copy remaining intact means that the story itself is unchanged, but that's not the core issue here. The core issue is whether or not a sequel/AU of a fill that changes said fill to be out of line with the request that prompted it should be written in the first place.

I just spent a week trying to get back everything that I had bookmarked on my old computer and am still having trouble with finding a couple of them.

- The name of the fill was "Rule Number 7" it was a fem!England thinking that France was cheating on her so she has an affair with Teenage America. It was a human AU too.

- A request for A Jellyfish Princess/Kuragehime cross over I think posted in part 16 or 17 or maybe 18 I am unsure but I searched through both of those parts and found nothing.

Fill was called "The Other One", I think... anyways it was for France and England to be in a long term relationship only to have England be cheating on France with America. France finds out and decides to have an affair too and somehow winds up with the same person England was cheating with. Seychelles was their daughter and it was a human AU.

Thanks for all the comments! I wouldn't actually be changing anything in the original request or fill, just writing a sequel with a much happier tone than the original since it left me craving for more and made me feel so sorry for the main character. There are some specifics in the original fill that are necessary for my idea, which is why the story would have to be a sequel, not an original fic with the same premise.

However, after what everyone has said, I realise it would be tacky as hell to post the story (the original fill is years old, so I doubt I can contact the author), so I'll just write the fic for my own enjoyment and not share it with anyone.

I don't have a lj account, and learned the hard way that just because it doesn't show up for the few days, DON'T post again.

While on one side I understand where you and the others against posting it are coming from. (IMHO, I think we're all a little sensitive over our fics, even if we insist we're not.) But, isn't it rather odd that we'd be upset about someone writing what essentially is...a fanfic of our fanfic?

I mean, we certainly don't have the original author's permission to be running amuck with their characters and plotlines but we do. And there's been several requests for alternate endings to scenes/strips and even djs on the meme before. And requests for sequels to previous fills, or admitting that requests are inspired by previous fills, ect.

I think I'd be surprised to find someone writing a fanfic to my fanfic. But I'd much prefer they admit they were inspired by my fic or to admit it's a fanfic fanfic then to take something unique from my fic and put it in theirs without referencing it.

IE: There's a fic I follow in another fandom. It's actually been on-going for a couple years because the writer is slow, but I love the fic so much I'm not even bothered by that anymore. LOL There's some unique things the writer had in her fic I hadn't seen in other fics about the set of characters - including nicknames she used. Recently, I'd noticed some of these things - down to the nicknames - suddenly popping up in more recent fics of the fandom. Without even referencing the on-going fic. I felt a little insulted for the writer, because there really wasn't anything canon-wise to inspire some of it. These things had been unique to her fic before, and suddenly were appearing in multiple other fics. I realize imitation is supposed to be the ultimate flattery, but the fic writers could have atleast admitted to where their inspiration came from.

To me, that's like writing a fanfic and calling it original. That insults me. Someone saying...well...I wrote a fanfic to your fanfic - here it is. Even if I don't like it, I think I'd be flattered. Just like I hope the creators of the works we fanfic feel about all the effort we put into our fics about their universes.
