The colorful variety of DVDs stand squished together between the limited walls of my shelves. Night is befalling, bringing the school week to an end, and putting all responsibilities on hold. As the evening continues on, there is still a much important task at hand.
“Okay dude, seriously, I can’t decide on which movie to watch.” I mutter as my eyes scan the array of titles, waiting for one to particularly stand out and catch my attention.
“Take your time. Just pick one that has action in it. You’ve got plenty of those, don’t you?” America suggests as he swings around in my desk chair, using my ruler as a drumstick against my desk.
“Yeah, but I kind of want something I can take seriously. Action’s fun and all, but I want to feel my stomach fall, tonight, y’know?”
“Batman’s serious. You’ve got Dark Knight, right?”
“Of course I do, but…I already saw that on HBO yesterday. Oh, how about Gone with the Wind? I haven’t seen that in a while.” I turned to him and shrug. He revealed his teeth in an uncomfortable hiss and bit his lower lip.
“Um…I don’t really…want to watch myself during my…split-personality episode.”
“Well, it’s not about you per se, and they spend the entire movie in the South anyway, so it’s not like we’re seeing both sides.”
“Also, it’s really long and old. I want something more recent.”
“Fine…” I groaned and rolled my eyes as I return to the possible movie choices.
“So does that mean Across the Universe is also out of the question?”
“Huh?”
“That musical…with Beatles songs…which takes place in America during the Vietnam War?”
“Oh…oh! Yeah, no. I like Vietnam, but I don’t like reminding myself of how much I broke my back over her.”
“Hmmm…Oh, I think I got something! It’s got heroes, serious drama, and an alternate universe where you and Vietnam actually got together!”
“Are you talking about…what I think you’re talking about?” America grinned and moved towards the DVD shelf.
“Take a guess.”
“We’re watching the Watchmen tonight, aren’t we?”
“Yeah, and check it; I got the Ultimate Edition with extra footage and Tales of the Black Freighter weaved in!” I proudly showed off the 3-inch black box set with the bright yellow lettering.
“That’s so freaking awesome!” He beamed at me with the enthusiasm of a child, “Can we watch it downstairs on the TV instead of the computer screen?”
“Sure thing. You get the popcorn, and I’ll put in the DVD.”
