In the 20th century, there was a shift in attitudes and some of the colonial powers began granting independence to their colonies without waiting for violent revolutions. The British Empire turned into the Commonwealth, the French colonial empire into La Francophonie...
What was it like for the empires to give up their colonies, without violent revolution or in trade to other countries? Were they happy, sad, glad that they only needed to deal with their own affairs again?
Yeah, I'm thinking mostly of France and England with this, but if there's another empire (or an AU or future fic or anything not-20th century CE) that gave up direct power instead of collapsing, go for it!
