Chapter 2 (cont.)

Germany, meanwhile, was giving a speech that he was almost absolutely sure no one was listening to.

"And so, you can see that if we..." he continued on, even as he felt the phone in his pocket vibrate signaling that someone was calling him. Well he wasn't about to answer in the middle of his speech, but he did have to wonder who would call him when everyone in his government knew he would be busy today and with all the other people he hung out with sitting in this very room. Still, he was in the middle of business, and whatever it was would have to what until his presentation was over. Still who could be calling?

Glancing at the clock he saw that his time was almost up. He finished his presentation to some mild applause, and sat down debating whether or not he should wait until lunch to check his phone. Although no one had looked very interested in what he had been saying at least none of them had left, so, even though he was curious he quietly sat through the rest of the speaker's presentations, albeit he did a poor job of stopping Italy from being as disruptive as he usually was. Or maybe Germany was the only one who ever thought that of the smaller Italian man. After all, it did seem like Germany was the only one he ever bothered. Finally Japan finished his speech, the last one before lunch break.

"Ve~ Finally! Germany, I thought I would collapse from hunger before that was over!" cried Italy jumping up from his chair at his joy from finally being allowed to eat.

"Yeah." said Germany, distractedly, to caught up in the curiosity of his cell phone to really pay attention to what it was Italy was saying. Fishing the mobile out of his pocket he saw he had a voicemail message. He dialed his own phone number and entered in the password he needed to to check it. Italy looked at Germany concerned before moving to stand in front of him and peer up at his face.

"Ve, ve, Germany, are you okay?" but something was definitely not okay. Italy could tell by the way Germany's pupils narrowed as he listened intently to whatever the person on the phone was saying. The tall blond man's grip on his phone tightened as well and he clenched his free hand into a fist.

"G-germany?" Italy asked worriedly, turning the name into a question as the other man put his phone back into his pocket.

Germany looked at him, without really looking at him. It made Italy frightened of whatever he was going to say. He clasped his hands together in front of his body to try and comfort himself.

"Ah..." said Germany pausing and looking around. Most of the other nations had left for lunch. A few milled around the room here and there, having conversations but none were within hearing distance, "It. It seems that. That brother is sick. That was a nurse at a hospital saying he collapsed on the sidewalk and. Someone called an ambulance for him." he finished. His sentences were choppy and fragmented.

Ludwig just stood there for a moment staring and silent, and then he seemed to come back to life. He turned to look at Italy.

"Well let's go eat." he said abruptly, turning to begin walking towards the door.

Before he could take a single step Italy grabbed his hand. Germany turned his head to look at him quizzically.

"Germany," began Italy looking down at their clasped hands, "you could go, if you want to." he continued looking up at Germany. "The others won't mind."

Germany just stared at Italy.
