(frozen comment) On the subject of Page 45

[identity profile] hetalia-kink.livejournal.com 2011-03-09 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey there anons. Just wanted to let you know that after cleaning out improperly formatted requests from the last two request cycles, only seven requests were left on page 45.

Because of the very small number of requests on that page, I have unscreened additional requests that originally did not make the page limit cutoff.

If your request was originally on page 46, you may want to check and see if the request is now unscreened.

So I'm curious - honestly curious. Why do some Anons post responses to fills in the fill list?

I get commenting that someone forgot to put 'Update' or pairing or some such, but lately it seems like someone's always got a comment up on at least one of the fill posts. I really don't get it.

A New York Yankee in Lord Arthur's Court

(Anonymous) 2011-03-11 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
f-first of all, I hope it's okay to post this here....

Anyway! I'm the author!anon of said fill on the tin. A couple of weeks ago, I may or may not have mentioned to a few anons that I'd be looking into trying to update this fill. Alas, life decided to kick it up a notch and this won't be happening. Sorry! I promise not to forget about it and maybe I will update sooner rather than later. But please know that I'm very grateful for the support I received from said anons, it still means a lot to me, even if it's been a long time. &hearts

When is a fill considered abandoned?

(Anonymous) 2011-03-12 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
After how long a period of time (one month, five months, etc.) do you think a fill has been abandoned? For me, I think three months or so without an update means the author probably isn't coming back.

I'm curious what you all think, though. I've gone a while without updating one of my fills and I don't want readers to think it's abandoned, but at the same time I can't write and post the update just yet.

So yeah, to summarize- How much time has to pass before you think a fill has been abandoned? After how long do you give up hope on that fill ever being revived?

Re: When is a fill considered abandoned?

(Anonymous) 2011-03-12 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Tough to say. Like you, I'm inclined to think of a fill as abandoned somewhere around the three-month mark, but I too have fills which I still plan to complete that I haven't updated for longer than that.

There've been rare cases where fills were picked up after many months neglected, but I would be very surprised if a fill left for more than, say, six months (without an official hiatus notice, which changes things) were resumed.

About the rec post and reccomendations

(Anonymous) 2011-03-12 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)

So, is it my impression or nobody goes around there lately? It feels like rec asking posts were more sucessful when they were included in the discussion post. Maybe more people saw them there or people hasn't realized the new rec post exists, I don't know. The pairings/kinks people is searching for aren't that complicated to not get any response at all. So, do you guys visit the rec post frequently?

Another question related to it. I always doubt if I should rec an unfinished fill (specially if it seems like it's abandoned). If it's a really weird kink/pairing and there's no a wider choice, I do. But when there are more options, would you rec a fill even if it's not finished? I admit I was surprised when I first saw that people posted on-going or abandoned fills in the pimp post (I know there is no rule against it). I just wouldn't be so sure about pimping something that has no end, I guess it'd have to be very peculiar or well written or have something perfectly done (a characterization, a particular scene, some historical event, etc.) so that I would want other people to discover a piece of writing that has no actual narrative conclusion or is only half-developed. What are your thoughts regarding this matter?

Re: About the rec post and reccomendations

(Anonymous) 2011-03-12 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I think one reason there's less traffic in the rec thread is that people have to want to go there. When it was in the discussion post, you'd be browsing, see someone asking for a rec and if you happened to know a good one, you might stop and link them. Now, you have to actually be inclined to do the work of seeking out the rec post, reading through all of the comments, and trying to sift through any bookmarks or links to find something for that anon. (I think this is actually a major problem with splitting the discussion post into pieces - it really reduces traffic everywhere and makes keeping up with any of the non-fill threads a chore.)

Secondly, the attitude of many of the rec requests in the post may have turned people off in the beginning when it was created. For example, the first few posts there were things like "ALL OF THE USUK" or "ALL OF THE POLAND" and other such major pairings/characters that have indexes, some of which are very up-to-date. None of it was specific, and were all things you could easily search the indexes for. This probably gave the impression to a lot of people that the type of people posting requests for recs in the rec post were lazy and didn't bother to check the indexes.

The number of specific recs, ie. "America/historical figure", "Scar Kink", "Brokeback Mountain", or even the "Prostitutes" one, seem to be on the rare side. And it's probably only the specific rec requests that would be likely to get any other comment than "Check the indexes". If you started looking through a new thread and the only thing you were able to say to people was over and over again was "check the indexes" you'd probably get pretty tired of it right away. Thus, turned away from the thread, and hence, no traffic. Not to mention, keeping in mind my first point, it was a chore to even go there and tell anons to look at the indexes. And who wants to do a thankless, pointless, and frankly boring chore?

tl;dr: The rec post is more like a chore, and the anons who post there typically wasted comment space and people's time asking for broad pairings and/or characters when they could have just gone to the indexes, leaving a bad taste toward the rec thread.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-15 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)

Re: What Can Be Deleted in Past Parts?

(Anonymous) 2011-03-16 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
...what? Don't only mods of the kink meme have the ability to delete posts?

You just have to deal with it. I have a fill in PPF4 that doesn't have a link to the continuation in PPF5 as well, but I'll just have to hope that people see it in the fills list when I post an update rather than any notifications they get from tracking the thread.

In Holland, peanut butter is almost a delicacy because its so expensive there.

In Asia, no.

In Canada, yes. Very much so.

Looking for prompt- England trapped

(Anonymous) 2011-03-16 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I've gone through parts 16 and 17 all over again (so maybe the request isn't there?), but I just can't seem to find a certain request I had bookmarked a while ago (which is now gone thanks to my lovely laptop breaking down on me a few weeks ago ^^;). I believe it dealt with England trapped in a cage and someone promising to set him free. Does this ring a bell to anyone (or did I imagine this prompt in my head)? Any help would be greatly appreciated <3

For the past day or so none of the notifications from Hetalia_kink have made it to my inbox. I'm tracking all comments in the fills lists (and I've checked to make sure it's the most recent one), as well as a few other posts, but I'm not getting any of the notifications from them even though there's been at least two pages worth of comments posted since I stopped getting them. There was a thing on [livejournal.com profile] news about it. Hotmail, AOL and Yahoo list livejournal.com as a spam site, so notifications are going into the spam folder. :/ That might be it?

A question.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-20 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
Not even sure if this would be the right place to post this. If not, I'll be happy if pointed to the right direction.

This could get long, but bear with me, as this could affect the meme in a way, so I wanted to make sure I do a temperature check before I even continue with my plan...

To encourage more fills (of a single specific pairing), I thought of proposing to my pairing's community mods a "kink meme contest/past unfilled prompt exchange" of sorts. The plan is still in the brainstorming stages, so there are lot of things that still need to be polished to make it work, but the main thing that concerned me is-- if an influx of a same-pairing fills appear in the fill list would be frowned upon, especially if the reason behind it was because of a contest/exchange from another community.

Thanks for reading this post in advance.

Re: A question.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-20 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I personally wouldn't care. If it was for a pairing I read, I'd read them, if it wasn't, I'd scroll down. Anything that gets things filled would be awesome by me, anon! :D

Update length...?

(Anonymous) 2011-03-23 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a fill that I'm posting at the moment, and I'm a bit worried. Do people want long-ish updates, or short, frequent ones? At the moment, I post every 4-6 days, with a one comment length update. Does it put you off?

Also, what are you looking for from updates - always plots, or are slight filler chapters alright? What if the fill is a gradual plot thing, with no real enemy or major event?
I ask that because the fill I'm writing is actually about the hetalia students turning into the nations, which doesn't happen suddenly, so...

Re: Update length...?

(Anonymous) 2011-03-23 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I adore long updates! But if the content of your update calls for short chapters, it's not good to force length. I get a bit turned off by WIPs that update frequently while going no where--like the same scene is going on, every time, and doesn't end/become something else. Filler is iffy; it can either be extra detail in a fill, or a tedious excess to scroll through.

In your case, those things would be bringing along character development, so I wouldn't worry.
