Any/any

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
How do you approach any/any prompts, anons? Do you ask the OP before picking a pairing, just to double check that they're fine with your idea? Or do you just go ahead? Do you think it's okay to use OCs in any/any prompts? If yes, would you have the same reaction towards, say, generally fanon-accepted Scotland/America and secretary!OC/America?

Does it annoy you when someone makes an any/any prompt but then includes a long laundry list of pairings that they would prefer and that they absolutely don't want?

What about when you make these prompts? Are you really fine with any/any? Is there a reason why you've made some prompt any/any instead of a specific pairing?

Re: Any/any

(Anonymous) 2013-06-21 09:36 am (UTC)(link)
I usually ask, but if there's a pairing I really like for the idea and I wouldn't be interested at all if it wasn't that one, I just go for it. As far as OCs, I don't write any non-canon characters myself, but even if I did I wouldn't include one in an Any/Any fill, just because there's no guarantee that it's a character OP wants to see at all. "Any," to me, implies any out of canon; to me it wouldn't be much different from filling with America/Ash Ketchum.

The pairing lists only bother me in a pedantic sense? You should put "Various pairings" instead, in that case. But I'd really actually PREFER that anons give me a big long list of exactly what they do and don't want, since the idea is meant to be that I'm writing fic for them!

I've never made an Any/Any prompt and I doubt I ever will, I'm way too picky about what I like, and my ideas are usually for a specific pairing anyway.

+1

Let me just say that I am absolutely thankful for the move here because of things like flat views being in the comment links and links that lead to the parent threads. I don't really visit dreamwidth so I didn't know about those things, but I tend to read entries in flat view because it's easier to see if a story I'm following have been updated there than when you track the journal for new posts (I have a free account in LJ and can't track specific threads). The read thread from parent post is also extremely helpful because I have lost count of the times I was discouraged in reading fics because they were linked in the middle and you have to click "parent" a billion times just to see the start of it. I know that leads to missing awesome stories, but it's such a hassle sometimes, especially when LJ was being really slow.

Newbie Thread

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
OP came up with this idea the other night.

Since we've been getting a lot of newbie's on the kink meme, why don't we have a thread for it?

The main purpose of this thread is for newbie's to ask questions they might have about how things work here on the kink meme. However, newbie's are also encouraged to make comments about what they do/don't like about the meme, and possibly make suggestions as well.

Looking for a high school AU fill

(Anonymous) 2013-06-22 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Alright guys, so I see a lot of things changed here recently, I hope I'm doing it right!

I'm desperately looking for a multichapter fill, an high school AU with Alfred and Arthur as main carachters.
Arthur is a straight sort of nerd kid, Alfred is very popular, part of the football's team and not exactly nice especially toward Arthur who's often bullied by Al and his friends. But Alfred is also secretly gay (in a relationship with Kiku). Arthur finds out accidentally and one day, when cornered by Alfred and his friends' cruelty, he spills the secret in front of a lot of people. Follows tragedy, with Alfred being rejected by his team mates who even get to the point of raping him to 'punish' him.
There's a sort of happy ending with Arthur helping Alfred recover and the two of them becoming friends.
Matt and Ivan also make an appearence as hockey team's players, and Francis too, as one of the few friends of Arthur.

Now, I'm pretty ashamed to say I'm not even 100% sure I red this on the meme ^^' but I know this is a popular fic among the fandom.

De-anoning etiquette

(Anonymous) 2013-06-25 11:40 am (UTC)(link)
I was browsing the meme and came across a request that I might fill. The OP listed which human names they prefer for nations that don't have them in canon. I have different preferences, so do you think it would be a dick move if I used the OP's choices on the meme but changed them into what I like when I de-anon? How would you feel if someone did that after filling your prompt?

Re: De-anoning etiquette

(Anonymous) 2013-06-25 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds like a good compromise to me. Because I definitely sympathise with you, there are some fanon human names I really don't care for, and just wouldn't feel as right using them in 'my' version of something I wrote even if I put them into a fill for a requester (whose prompt I otherwise got along well with), and on the other side of things I don't think I'd mind terribly if someone deanoned a version with the names I dislike if they had first filled it with my preferred names.

Noncon vs Dubcon

(Anonymous) 2013-06-25 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Can I ask how you qualify noncon versus dubcon? I understand that noncon = rape and dubcon = consent under impairment, but is a story with the victim say yes only because of a threat (like blackmail or fics with power imbalance) dubcon or noncon? It's clearly rape, but since the receiver says yes, would that be dubcon or something?

How would you guys differentiate between the two?

Re: Noncon vs Dubcon

(Anonymous) 2013-06-25 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say your situation with the "only saying yes because of threat" is dubcon. They gave consent, but didn't really want to.

I define the terms this way:
Noncon - does not give consent; clearly does not want; character may be unconscious
Dubcon - may give consent even if does not want (given that other person is aware of the does not really want); or consent under impaired state i.e. drunk
Consensual - both parties say yes, (but one may not actually want to (given the other not being aware of this)); includes one party saying yes only because he/she thinks it will make the other party happy or because of duty i.e. arranged marriage; also includes enthusiastic consent
Enthusiastic consent - both parties really want it and make this clear to each other

I'm sorry if this is confusing to you. I separated enthusiastic consent from other types of consent because I really like it and request it specifically in some of my prompts.

Advice for writing D/s fic?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm writing a consensual D/s fill, and doing research for it. In the course of doing said research, I'm also realizing how little I actually know. Does anyone have any tips on writing this, or website recommendations for research or the like? What makes a good D/s fic for you?

Re: Advice for writing D/s fic?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not an expert by any means, but... what makes a good D/s fic for me is headspace. I like to see the trust between the two, the willingness (even eagerness) of one person to obey the other, the control and care that's exerted. It's less (for me) a matter of what's happening physically, so much as how the characters are reacting to it.

The recipe for comments

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
In your experience, what kind of fics tend to get a lot of comments? Do you think all your popular/unpopular stories have something in common that could explain the number of comments they have?

Re: The recipe for comments

(Anonymous) 2013-07-09 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the obvious thing is of course the pairing. A lot more people are going to click on a fic that features a popular pairing, and that means more people are likely to comment. But even fics with unpopular pairings can get lots of comments if the kink popular or the fic is really well written.

It seems to me that the fills that usually end up with no comments at all are really short fics that feature an obscure pairing. Something like "France/Estonia - kissing on a train" when the fic is only some 500 words long. Fics with obscure pairings seem to require multiple chapters and lots of build-up/plot before people comment on them.

Also, in my experience the first chapter almost always gets the most comments, and then people drift away unless something dramatic happens in later chapters that inspires them to comment. I sometimes struggle to say more than "This fill is still good" when someone updates, and I'm sure others feel the same and never say anything at all.

Imperial!Japan, Communist!Russia, etc- How do you portray them?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-12 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
It's exactly what it says on the tin- How do you portray Imperial!Japan and Communist!Russia (and maybe even Empire/Pirate!England and North Korea)?

Because I've seen so many portrayals of them (Insane, cynical, unwilling, "It's for your own good") that I wanted your opinion.

What portrayal do you like best, and how would/do YOU portray them?

Re: Imperial!Japan, Communist!Russia, etc- How do you portray them?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-12 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, for me it varies from fic to fic. My standard one for Russia though is I treat the Soviet Union as a split personality. That way I can still use a lot of the dark stuff from the Soviet Union, but not making Russia completely the big bad villain.

As for Imperial Japan... well, I have never written him but that time period is the entire reason I won't ship Japan with any of the other Asian nations.

On Deanoning...

(Anonymous) 2013-07-12 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
This anon has seen other anons with this dilemma, and is going to have this dilemma soon, so wanted other anons opionion on the subject.

When it comes to deanoning, what is a good point to deanon? It's usually encouraged to deanon, mainly near the end. Which is good when it's something like a one shot. However, when doing a fill that is really long (or something past ten parts, I guess), how do you feel is best to go at it? Deanon in the middle of the fill? Wait until the end anyways?

I don't mind waiting till I'm done with the fill, my only problem with that would be the concern of spamming the inboxes of people that follow me on fanfiction.net with 15 or so chapters.

Comments?

Re: On Deanoning...

(Anonymous) 2013-07-12 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
I always de-anon when the fic is done. In case of long stories, I post it backdated on Livejournal all at once and then do slower updates on FF.Net and AO3, something like one chapter per day or even slower. That way, I won't spam anyone, but those who don't want to wait for updates also have the option of reading it on LJ.

Is this the one you're looking for? If it isn't (pretty sure I read another one not so long back with England wanting to be the one getting pissed on) the England kindex (https://delicious.com/england_kindex) is pretty useful, as I got the other link through there. Can't find it now, of course (Murphy's Law), but it should be floating somewhere around the oral sex/rough sex tags I've been looking at recently.

Human Names VS Nation Names?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Is it just me, or does anyone else shy away from using nation names? Especially when writing about my own native country, it almost feels like - well, trespassing isn't the right word, but it's the only one I can come up with at the moment.

Also, which do you prefer to see while reading? I personally don't mind reading either, except for when I accidentally stumbled upon Hetalia completely by accident and I was all... Who is this guy and why is he named after a country?

Re: Human Names VS Nation Names?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
I shy away from country names in D/s fic, because of the implications. Other fic, I don't mind which names are used, but when it comes to BDSM and D/s, I really prefer human names to be used, even if the story is still canonverse. I also like the way that using human names can be used to indicate intimacy between characters, too.

Nations: Secret or not secret?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
So, out of curiosity-- do you prefer fics that present the personifications as a secret, or those that don't? Personally, I prefer fics where it just doesn't come up at all, but if it does, I lean more towards the latter and typically avoid any fic that revolves around the secret theory (though that's down more to a string of bad fic experiences). I'm not a fan of fics that drop in a "whoops, careful not to blow our cover there" scene when it has nothing to do with the fic itself; frex, the characters have to be reminded to call each other by human names in an airport just before going off on a private vacation where they don't interact with humans the whole rest of the time.

Re: Nations: Secret or not secret?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-18 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I like to think that important government officials, their families, some secretaries, their personal drivers, neighbours and other people who are in regular contact with them know but that it's not such an open thing that every single person in the street would know who they are. Though I like the idea that random people are drawn to their nation and think there's something strange/comforting/scary about him or her, depending on the context.

But in general, I don't like stories that make a huge issue out of his into either direction, especially when the plot doesn't need it.

I'm having a blast with the France/Liechtenstein arranged marriage fill because the world building and characterization of the side characters makes the whole story feel so alive and genuine. It's also really interesting to see such a rare pairing and how it works within the story.

(And I suppose theoretically "Italia" and "Mask" could count.)

Your strengths and weaknesses

(Anonymous) 2013-07-20 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you consider your strenghts and weaknesses as a writer?

Re: Your strengths and weaknesses

(Anonymous) 2013-07-20 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
My weakness is mainly that I have trouble plotting. Another is that I have trouble forcing myself to write.

Strengths...at my best, I can be both concise and evocative.

What makes a good prompt?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-25 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Just something I've been curious about recently. What makes a prompt enticing? What makes a prompt appealing to you?

Re: What makes a good prompt?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-25 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I like flexibility with pairings. My OTP doesn't get many requests, so I'm happy when I see any/any or any/character A type of prompts

There should also be enough details to get my imagination running and to show what the OP would especially like, but the same time the prompt shouldn't be too detailed. I don't want to fill a prompt that is basically a plot summary with no leeway for me make my own decisions.

Unfinished Fills

(Anonymous) 2013-07-26 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just wondering, I'm pretty new to the kink meme, and I've been finding a lot of unfinished fills - or so it seems to me. Is it just that they've moved to a new part, and I can't find it, or is it really common? And if the author has moved to a new part, how would I find the fill again?

Re: Unfinished Fills

(Anonymous) 2013-07-26 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
If the part is/was closed, the fill would be moved to the past-part fills post.

does dreamwidth have a character limit on it's comments? i can't find it.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-26 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
According to the first post sticky:

4. [...] Note that if your fill exceeds 16,000 characters, DreamWidth will require you to split your post into multiple posts; [...]

Dreamwidth's FAQ confirms this: http://www.dreamwidth.org/support/faqbrowse?faqid=43

The maximum length of a comment is 16,000 characters.

I was browsing through the fills list, and I came across this fill that I really liked, but I couldn't figure out how to leave a comment. Help?

There should be a link saying "reply to this" at the very bottom of the story. Or did you end up on Livejournal? It's no longer possible to comment there, only on Dreamwidth.

UK and the representation thereof

(Anonymous) 2013-07-28 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'm new to the fandom but earlier, I saw someone complaining about England/Igirisu/Britain being the representation of the UK. In such a short time, I think this is the fourth(?) or so time I've seen it so I was wondering if it was a prevalent thought in the fandom.

The complaint was basically that the UK is composed of four countries and the character of England/Britain/Igirisu is so stereotypically English that him being made to represent the UK was stupid. In a show that does not rely on national stereotypes, I think that would be a legitimate complaint. But as someone not from the UK (or the Commonwealth), when UK is mentioned, I think of the Union Jack, London, the Queen/Diana/royalty, Big Ben, RP, tea, posh people, outrageous hats, BBC, red buses, spies, The Beatles and Buckingham Palance. Sometimes, kilts and bagpipes as well but overwhelmingly, it is things specific to England so "Igirisu" being the rep for the UK (and England) actually made sense to me.

If you weren't into history and/or geography and/or international relations, what comes to mind when you hear UK? And if you think Igirisu/Britain/UK shouldn't be overwhelmingly English, what other stereotypes should Himaruya have chosen for the character?

I don't think he would do such a bad job at representing the whole U.K at all, but the association with him just being England is so entrenched now in fandom...
